Hello,

I had typed a big long question and info. but it just dissappeared for some odd reason - So here goes the short version -

I need to worm my cats for tapeworms

According to the dosage chart I'd have to give my cats 1 and 1/2 tabs. If I used the dog pills It would only take 1 tab to equal 1 1/2 cat tabs.

Tradewinds Tape Worm Tabs for Cats: Tradewinds Tape Worm Tabs 3 Tabs 23mg Each

Trade Winds Praziquantel Canine Tape Worm Tabs (five 34-mg tablets bottle)

If they are the same active ingredients why can't they be used on both cats and dogs. Other than for profit of the individual packaging saying cat or dog.

Would it be safe to use the canine product for the cats?

Hope thats good enough info. my last post was more informative but there's a quick summary.

Thanks for any help and info.

(I copied it this time incase it gets lost in cyber space again, wish I'd remember to do that last time) :DOH!

I would give my vet a call and ask to verify your thoughts. I have a good relationship with my vets and they are usually willing to give advice for things I purchase for my pets that are not through them. The techs are less inclined to give out info like that so you may want to talk to the vet directly if you can.

With the guidance from my vet I have been able to do coversions on some other de-wormers and topical de-flea preparations between my dogs and cats and it was fine but they know the pharmacology stuff better so I don't do it without their input. It would be close though, you'd only be under dosing .5 mg using the dog version but I don't know if that would be enough of a difference to make it less effective or not.

Tapes are a pain to get rid of, you have my sympathies.

Thanks for the reply!

I called the vet that I recentally just gave $800 to help one of my other cats whom in the end still lost the battle, it broke my heart!

Anyway, they told me, I would have to bring the cats in, and they wouldn't consider disscussing it with me nor would they let me speak to the vet.

With the economy being sooo bad we need a knowledgable group of people to help us be able to take care of our pets. People can not afford to run to the vet for every little common thing. I'm surprised I haven't found a web site with similiar info. I'm sure there's got to be some,, any suggestions??

I'm going to try and email the company!

thanks!!

Try contacting the consumer help line of the drug company/distributor that should be on the back of the packaging, or perhaps you can google them Online. I'll bet they have vets assigned to answering questions and I'm sure they would say if there was a reason NOT to use their dog dewormer on cats. If the ingredients are truly the same, I'll bet they are packaged differently to prevent people from overdosing their pets and suing the company.

Thats pretty much what happened!

Except I don't think it was a vet just customer service. They said they were the same ingredients just different mg per pill.

Thanks!!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
