I was just wondering if you have ever had a mare that was making a large bag, act like she was in season when the stallion is around. I have a mare about 2 weeks from her foal date that has been showing all the classic signs of being in season, yet she is making a large bag. Has anyone had this happen and did the mare have a foal or do I have a false pregnacy? Thanks for any input.

I've never have them actually come in season. But they do get "hormonal" towards the end and I've seen them act like they want the stallion(through the fence of course).

My vet and I had this discussion yesterday. I have an older mare who I was questioning pregnancy on. We did a blood test and sent it off, with a mixed result of "She could be pregnant, but most likely not because of her progesterone level." Last week she came into heat and I bred her multiple times to the stallion. Monday I looked at her bag and she has a little bag and has white milk. So I inquired about that with the vet. He said that sometimes their heat cycle can give them a little bit of a bag, and cause them to produce milk, but it's a short term thing. He was right, checked last night, swelling is down and still a tiny milk, but not much.

I've never had a mare that was in foal allow a stallion to breed her, but have had a couple of "hussies" who would stand by the fence when they were heavy in foal and tease the stallion, turn their but to him, wink at him, etc. If she is showing heavy signs of interest in the stallion, I would question her pregnancy unless it is confimed or she's obviously in foal. Good luck!

I have one mare that will always tease to the stallion but normally wont let him breed her and we have had a mare that was vet checked in foal in the fall end up having a false pregnancy, she looked bred and had a bag and everything and then we let her out to play with a recently gelded horse and she let him mount her and she is not one to let a stallion near her unless she is in heat. But I have heard of some mares that will let a stallion breed them when they are truly in foal so who knows!
