I have a Jerald runabout with natural stain shafts. I replaced the shafts on it a couple of years ago and the first time I used it I marred the shafts with breeching buckles. It made me sick, but I didn't know how to fix it. I recently read of a wood product called Qualasole and ordered some. I've been working on my shaft damage today with the product and it looks so much better! I'll be touching up some other areas on the cart now.

It was recommended to wipe the area with mineral spirits, then sand with 320 paper, then apply the Qualasole. I've put 3 coats on so far and it's looking good.

Has anyone heard of this product?

What are your secrets to make minor finish repairs on natural wood shafts?

I've never heard of that. We do a similar process, but just use Spar Urethane. A spray can works well for small areas.

To eliminate the possibility of having the buckles damage your shafts (been there, done that

), make sure the shaft trim is long enough to go under your buckles. Replacing shaft trim is not that hard if you have a scissors, a staple gun, and a buddy. You can get shaft trim kits from Iowa Valley.

I've never heard or/seen shaft trim. I will check into that.

I've thought of using the spray, but was afraid I wouldnt' get it on evenly and it would look blobby.

Shaft trim is the usually patent black trim on shafts and singletrees. Sometimes they are called shaft horns.

How is Qualasole applied?

I went to Iowa Valley and saw the kits. I will call them to inquire about it. They said they have instructions available for those who do not know how to use the kit.

Qualasole is rubbed on with a soft rag. I think I understand that it builds up. It is for furniture, but I thought it might work on my shafts, since I had no idea what kind of finish was on them. I should have taken a before/after photo. Also need to take it out into the sunshine and look at the results. No sunshine today, just lots of wind and clouds.
