I went to get feed today and my store now carries Purina Omelene 400.

I bought some! It has beet pulp in it.! 12%. Sounds like the perfect feed. So wondered if anyone else is feeding it.

The following I copied from the Pruina website.......

For competition and breeding horses with roughage built-in . . . Purina® Omolene #400™ Horse Feed contains the Purina® Amplify® Nugget, a patented, high fat, extruded particle that contains a proprietary blend of vegetable oils, flax seed and rice bran for an optimal fatty acid profile. It also contains a high amount of loose beet pulp shreds as an excellent source of fermentable fiber for slow release energy. Omolene #400™ Horse Feed contains no barley, oats or alfalfa making it ideal for horses that are heave prone or allergic to dust and mold found in hay and other foodstuffs.

Recommended For:

Adult maintenance, performance and breeding horses.

Feed Form: Beet Pulp and Extruded Nuggets

I haven't used Omalene 400 yet, but have used Purina products and we are pretty sold on them. This does sound like a very good feed. Last night we went to a Purina meeting at Powel's Feed store. It was quite interesting, and I had the chance to talk to the guy after. We have 4 minis, and they all eat differently. However, after talking with him, we have come home and are re-evaluating how we feed. Maybe, I will try this since I feed soaked beet pulp anyway along with rice bran and flax. Do you know what the calorie content of this feed is?

I had used the 400 when it first came out which was last year. It was for a horse that was already on the 200 but wanted that extra boost in weight and I thought the added beet pulp would help alot. Well just a couple days on it he coliced and died. I also had one that was on the new 200 that also had coliced but survived. Needless to say I don't even feed Purina anymore. I just simply did not like the new formula.

Anyways I'm sure others had success but wanted to share my experience.

I don't feed much Purina, but I"m pretty sure the Omolene 400 is basically the same as the feed they used to call "Complete Advantage".

There are two words in the description of the feed that makes me think it's not a good idea for minis-HIGH FAT. My little piggies are fat enough!

Omolene 400 used to be Complete Advantage. They changed the name and increased the price about $6 a bag here.

For the most part Oml 400 is just the complete advantage with some very slight tweaking. Then Oml 500 is sort of a sweet feed type verson of the Ultium. I'm a big Purina fan, I feed Strategy and Oml 200 though.

I have fed Purina products to my horses all of my life. My family used to raise and show Appaloosa halter horses and we always used Omolene 200 or 300. I currently have both of our minis on Omolene 200 and so far am very happy with the results. I also worked for a Purina dealership for a couple of years, and while they were switching thier formulas. Omolene 400 is like Complete Advantage with the Amplify nugget added in. Also, the Omolene 500 is based on Race Ready, again with the Amplify nugget added. I remember reading about JSM and what happened with your horses. I cannot imagine what that must have been like. I did put the word out to our Purina rep about that. He hasn't heard of any other cases, but was definitely alerted to yours.

I liked the idea of Omolene 400 and did feed several bags of it. I found it to be user 'unfriendly'. The feed cakes together and becomes like a brick. It is very difficult in the winter - almost impossible to scoop out. So I'm back to Omolene 200. I've thought about the Omolene 500, but everyone is doing well on Omolene 200, so perhaps I'll stick with what works.

Just wondering...for those of you who feed Omolene 200. How much do you feed per average miniature horse?

That is what I think happened with my guy that he got so impacted by the feed that I had ask Purina about it since it was such a new feed have they had any problems with colic and of course they said no. I had always fed Purina and also the Omelene but once they changed it I did not care for it an 2 colics once switched to the new feed I quickly switched my feeding program.

Now I feed a pelleted feed made by Kent, I like it and has proved to work.

Jennifer - I feed between 1 to 3 lbs twice a day with an average of 1.5 lbs twice a day. I also feed about 6-8 alfalfa cubes twice a day and supplement with Platinum.

We have fed the 400 and 200 and never had any problems with feeding it with the horses, sometimes if the store has it stacked on the pallet for awhile it does get pretty compressed. I would take ours out of the bags and put in garbage cans and broke it up more, but that was too bad since it.

We don't feed Purina grain any longer here, we have a feed mill very close that makes our feed custom blended now and we add ground flax, sunflower seeds and soaked beet pulp and alfalfa cubes with their grain every day.
