A little background: A week ago yesterday, I observed a white SUV pull up across the street from me at the church, a large dark headed woman got out of the SUV, walked over to the church yard and tossed a small black kitten into the yard, got back in her car and left. She evidently knew it was illegal as she had her tag covered.

I, of course, went and got the tiny kitten and brought it home. It is covered in fleas. I bathed it but there are still fleas. I am afraid to use flea powder on such a young kitten.

Does anyone know what I can safely use to get rid of the fleas?

This kitten is about 6 weeks old. It is eating well but was so skinny that you could see it's ribs. It has an appointment with the vet but I would like to get rid of the fleas NOW.

Thanks,

Mary

Our cat, who is ten years old now, was covered with fleas when we got her at about 6 weeks old. At that time the vet said there wasn't anything on the market that could be used on a kitten so young. He said to just go ahead and bath her every day of two. It did get rid of the fleas but not overnight. The only drawback is that as she got older when ever anyone takes a shower she wants to get in and get wet too. :)

Do you have Revolution (selamectin) in the U.S.? It's a topical treatment and it's awesome. I give all our kittens a treatment at 6 weeks (as a preventative); it treats and prevents fleas, ticks, roundworms, and hookworms. 6 weeks is the earliest you can give it. For kittens it comes in a .25ml tube.

Matt beat me too it. Revolution is also what I use and it works very well. You have to get it through your local Vet or have your Vet write a prescription out for it.

Also gets ear mites. I give our dogs and cats Revolution starting in March or April through to October or November (once/month). The nice thing, too, is that it's safe for pregnant/lactating animals, so my cats usually get a dose a week to two weeks prior to giving birth.

See if any stores around you carry Diamataceous Earth. I HAVE used this so I CAN say it does work! I had a really bad flea infestation with 7 indoor cats and used this on cats, carpets, bedding, furniture etc. Very safe and effective. It doesn't kill them on contact like chemical products do, but it is much safe for your pet, yourself and the environment. It can be given orally too... remember your kitten most certaintly has worms as well. I reccomend the reading on this page Diamataceous Earth

I found out that believe it or not, Head & Shoulders works!

So does Dawn soap.

Good luck with the kitty Mary!

Yep Dawn works well but so does T-Gel shampoo. The advantage is T-Gel also will relieve the horrible itchy skin that will be there from all the flea bites. Also works great on horses tails when they are super itchy or after you discover lice and rid them of it. You can either buy Nutragena or the stores generic brand which is way cheaper.

Thank you for picking up the little kitty and giving it a safe home.
