We lost a really nice little yearling colt this morning, and as of yet have no idea what happened. I found him when I went to feed this morning, already long gone. He was going to World and has been working regularly, no colic or apparent illness. He's been a little lethargic lately but we all have, it's been over 100 many days so I wasn't overly concerned. There is one very small puncture on the front of his neck, otherwise not a mark on him and no signs of struggle. I'm just at a loss.

Very sorry to read about your loss. Poor little guy, I wonder if the little puncture mark played any part...hopefully you can get some answers.

I understand about horses being lathargic..mine are the same way and have been for over a month....no one wants to do anything that resembles a trot....its just to dang hot.

REST IN PEACE LITTLE MERLOT

A fox killed a large duck here on our farm.

If I hadn't seen the fox doing the deed I would not have guessed the fox. All I saw on the duck was a puncture where the fox had gone in for the blood.

If it was an animal though I would think your little guy would have struggled.

Very sad and terrible event. So sorry to hear this.

Oh no! I am so sorry Jan. that puncture.....gunshot? I hope to God not!

Our show horses have been less than enthusiastic about exercise in the 100+ temps with high humidity, but all have been eating well. Was he eating well?

The puncture or scrape is very small, I was thinking possibly snake bite - if it has any significance at all. There is only one, but still possible. Yes, he's been eating well, just nothing at all that I can point to and say, well yes that makes sense. He was a little guy, just over 26".

What about allergic reaction to a bee sting? Poor thing. I am so sorry, this is heart breaking.

Gunshot? .....how scarey...I was thinking more of a snakebite or something. When my dog was bit by a rattler there was only 1 puncture in his muzzle...if I didnt see the snake just moments later I would have never guessed a snake. No blood.

I am so sorry to read about your loss. I too was thinking snake bite. Fortunately we do not have to worry about that, just the COLD.

Wow, Jan, that's just terrible news. So sad.....

I lost a yearling filly a few years ago. Fine at noon one day. Normal, healthy looking. Went back out 3 hours later to find her dead. The only thing I could think of was a possible aneurism (sp).

Oh jeez! That is a nightmare. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers. Hugs!

Jan, I'm so sorry. What a shock! That's a fear I have almost every day - wondering what I'll find in the morning.

I am so sorry for your loss Jan. We lost a weanling filly that I was showing the day I was sending in entries for the World. No clue on her either. Hate that.

I remember seeing him on the Stars site, and he was beautiful. I'm truly sorry to hear he is gone.

Jan, I'm so sorry to read of your loss. I know it's just heartbreaking.

Some *thing* caused it. Sounds like it was fast. Poor little guy.

I'm so sorry Jan - it sounds like it might have been a snakebite to me also - altho an aneurism will hit fast and be almost instantaneous also. Sounds like he didn't suffer which should be a small relief

(((( Hugs ))))
