I have a colt who is a solid chestnut but he has sabino roaning starting to come through. There are two spots on him about the size of a quarter and the rest is just through his body. He has no other white on him.

His mother has a small white spot on her nose and his sire is a chestnut pinto. (photo below).

Can someone explain the sabino roaning thing again, please.

Thanks! :saludando:

Well, it's unpredictable and usually happens later in age, not early. I have a mare who has gotten so much additional roaning at 8 yr old that she's predominantly white all the way across her back now. Was dark chestnut there. In her case she is a pinto. But the roaning has been relatively confined.

Yet another sabino mare has gotten her roaning heavily on her tailhead and it now has practically increased the size of a pinto spot in a nearby area. Plus, she is roaning all over and it is quite noticeable.

A third was born with big blaze, 4 whites. At about 2 she began the dots on her back -- I was hoping for lace, but they stopped and are sabino spots. At 4 she is now getting a nice even roaning started across back and on her neck. Like you started at the top and are working down the body. So, who knows what she'll have next year .

Then SOME, get very little. I liken it to an appy changing or coloring out. Each year you have a "new" horse  Neither of these have parents who are true grey, so none of that going on either.

Added: It seems that the sabinos DO like to get these little "spots" of white. Mine have developed them, like you took a dobber and dotted them. Favorite locations are back and belly. Sometimes only a couple.

It's my understanding that sabino is more than one gene, so I imagine there is more than one visual type of sabino and how it progresses.

I don't think any of my minis have sabino, but three of my full-size have it. 17 yo AQHA mare (sold to little girl a couple years ago) has blaze and sabino roaning in her flank and tail head and one sabino spot on thigh (quarter sized); her daughter 9 yo APHA breeding-stock mare, blaze, 3 white legs, sabino roaning in her flank; and 3 yo AQHA gelding (out of AQHA mare) has blaze, lip white, 4 white legs and sabino roaning in his flanks. AQHA mare, the roaning increased over the years, but not to a large extent, her flanks just looked more roan and a few roan hairs mixed in all over. APHA mare, the roaning hasn't really changed nor has the gelding's markings.

I was just down in the pasture and Toy's dam does have sabino roaning in the flanks and some white hairs on her forehead.

So, what pinto color pattern is sabino roaning associated with?

Sabino roaning is caused by the Sabino gene. Sabino is also associated with facial marking (from a few hairs to full blaze, upper and lower lip white is common), leg white (usually at least one leg).

It's often lumped under overo, but I don't know if it's technically a pinto pattern. Equinecolor.com classifies it just under white patterns.
