Has anyone tried sedation dentistry?

I think you just get to take a pill and then to to la la land.

I have a mouthful of problems (sigh) and I am a dental weenie. Even though I"ve worked in the profession for years, I am not a good patient and I certainly do not like pain in any form. I'd appreciate a dentist that would put me out of my misery.

Marty, after having problem teeth all his life, Jerry (mine) said enough, pull them OUT. He went to an oral surgeon and had 8 teeth removed the first time, 12 the second. Forty Five minutes before going in to the surgeon, he had one valium to take, by the time he staggered into the office, he just didn't care about much of anything, giggled, told funnies and etc. The second trip he was still drunk on another pill, but wasn't as bad as the first. Of course they put him to sleep to do the surgery, but he wasn't feeling any pain at all. I have seen others in the surgeons office waiting, and I can tell you, they weren't feeling any pain either. It's the way to go!

I had to change my dentist because my last one caused me so much pain I was literally afraid to go to the dentist. My last visit with him I had to competely put a stop in the middle of what he was doing cause he was hurting me so badly.

Our next step for me was sedation dentistry. I was still worried and was afraid it wouldn't work, and I've been under it twice now and it was wonderful. Expensive, yes, but it sure saves you a whole lot of pain and fear. I'm not afraid to go to then dentist anymore, excepts I still don't like it, and my new dentist makes sure I'm in no pain.

I have to go back again pretty soon cause got to get my wisdom teeth pulled out, defintelly not looking forward to that  Go to sleepy land again lol.

Done it 2x now- both times to have really problem teeth pulled that they felt they couldn't freeze my jaw well enough for- didn't feel a thing- I would recommend it- from my experince( no needles :bgrin )

Remember there are a couple of different kinds.

You have the IV type that knocks you out.

The valium type that makes you not care.

and

some dentists use one of the date **** drugs so you don't remember anything. I have known people that do this and LOVE it.

I personally would NOT use the last type unless someone I trusted stayed in the room with me during the procedure.

Haven't tried it but am definitely intrigued by it. I was also starting to fear/hate the dentist because they just could not seem to get me numb in the last couple of procedures I had done. When the dentist told me that I had another cavity behind my 2 front teeth I told her quite honestly that I'd rather fall and break my wrist (which I have done falling off a horse) then stick me in that tissue above my 2 front teeth again.

When she couldn't offer me much more in the way of pain relief, either for that particular injection site as well as she couldn't get me numb after several injections when working in other areas of my mouth, I decided to go to a place where they did offer laughing gas at least.

It was pretty nice. I knew what was going on but did not care nearly as much. Anyone ever get hurt after a few adult beverages? It was sort of like that - you know it's happening, but it's just not all that big of a deal. :bgrin

Hi........

I've had both. I had impacted wisdom teeth out in my late 20's (should have been done way before that. but I was too sissy) and had the IV kind. LOVED IT! :aktion033:

I also have had the valium type pill....for teeth pulling......didn't bother me a bit. My problem is, they cant seem to numb my mouth enough, even with a nerve block. So, I have tried both and they worked for me. Don't be afraid. I would ask your regular Dr. to prescribe you something, as he/she knows you best, IF you are going the pill route. Good luck,

Alicia

I won't go into the details..... I'll just say I won't get into a dentist's chair unless I'm going to be knocked out by something.

Its been some 20 years since I had it but one time they gave me some kind of gas to breath along with the novacain. It worked great for making me not give a darn what was going on. Made me feel like this---- :cheeky-smiley-006: :488: :new_rofl:

Marty --- you go get it done and be sure and tell us how it turned out.

I need to have a LOT of work done to my teeth/mouth and after my last dentist visit in 1999 - I just don't want to go there -- I really need to do it and am CHICKEN

Sooooo --- hurry up and let me know what you had done and if it worked

For you that have experienced that the dentist can't get you numb any longer BEWARE. Several years ago, I had that happen. Dentist told me to come back in 6 months. I changed Dentists, and found that I had pyorrhea, pretty advanced. New dentist told me that not being able to numb me should have been the first clue to the old dentist. Anyway, long story short, ask the dentist if that is possibly what is wrong with you or switch dentists and get a second opinion.

My ex mother in law goes to a dentist that uses a combination of sedation methods... she has some valium to take before she goes in (she gets so upset that he usually gives some to take the night before as well), then they give her a second pill when she gets there (no clue what it is) and some gas. The next thing she knows she is all done and on her way home.

She LOVES it. She has always been terrified of the dentist so she neglected her teeth, but now she takes good care of them and gets whatever work she needs done while she is dream land.

I am HORRIBLE with stuff like that. I did the sedation they gave me a shot of something to pull a tooth and I dont remember a darn thing I was out .. only way I would do any dentist stuff

I dont go that far. I just get gassed up good and numbed. I have a awsome dentist and is constantly asking if I am feeling anything and will stop instantly if I do.

I was in the dentest every other day for a few weeks. When its all said and done next week I will have put over $3,000 in my mouth in less then a month.

But then all I need is a cleaning and my mouth is good to go again.

Marty I havent had this done but hubby has when I had my teeth pulled 1000 years ago they only offered novakane but hubby has been the route of take a pill before you go and other meds when you get there and he did great with it. No pain no fear.
