I may decide to bathe Halo this next Saturday, if the weather is still this warm and see I can get more of her winter furries off of her. I have no idea what is the best shampoo for her and what conditioner would you use on her mane and tail? I do have some natural shampoo and conditioner that I use for dogs, that has a lot of essential oils in it, with some of them being bug deterrents, it also has Emu oil in it and would really be good for her skin. Would I be able to use that? It says for use on all animals. It isn't just for dogs. Anyway, some suggestions would help. I may not be able to find certain ones here, but I could try.

I've used dog shampoo on my horses before, it doesn't hurt them. I like to use blue dawn now, it breaks down the oils but it is good if you need to clip after bathing. I really love Lambert kay freash and clean dog shampoo it is my fav. For manes and tails I like to use pantene conditioner, then spray with showsheen and brush.

What you have sounds perfect.

We've always just used human stuff, and baby shampoo on the face. I also always put cotton balls in their ears to keep the water out.

My aunt works in a high end shampoo factory. Anything with a funny label etc she gets for free. My guy gets bathed with whatever we have from their. The "Bain de Terre" product line makes wonderful leave in conditioners. I've used laundry soap too, with good luck, as well as dish soap on tough spots, orvus (which is magic), and pantene too.

I couldnt count the # of shampoos I have for my guys but now I only use Dawn, the blue stuff. I love it and its so much cheaper. Conditioner...anything thats cheap, human or horse!! I dont really have a favorite

I used mane and tail shampoo, but I found that suave works too and doesn't harm your horse.

What about dry skin and dandruff? My little dwarf looks like she has dry skin and as I use the shedding blade on her it seems to lift up dandruff. I looked for a special dandruff shampoo at our co-op, there were many shampoos but none for dandruff or dry skin. I ended up getting one that had lots of natural ingredients and Roes Water, believe it or not it was called "Cowboy Shampoo" no joke!!

But of course it was kind of chilly here today and windy so I did not use it yet!!

Maybe there is a medicated shampoo??

Sometimes they just need lots of currying for dry skin. The Cowboy Magic brand you got is just fine.

I buy a brand of horse shampoo and then I prefer Pantene conditioner for both me and my horse.

For dry flaky skin you can use selsen blue human shampoo, and then get some sarna lotion for the really bad areas.

Ok, thanks, sounds like what I have, will work fine. We are suppose to only get into the 70's now. So I may not get to bathe her, and may even be happy she still has some furries on her, for night time.

Orvus for really dirty horses here, but I've used baby shampoo and pantene and pantene conditioner with success. Orvus will strip oils and pantene replenishes. Then of course vetrolin shine. Nothing I've used works as nicely as vetrolin shine for keeping them shiny, and mirror silky, and detangled

We have always bathed with Orvus unless the horse is white or grey then we have used Orvus first followed up with Quic Silver. A good spray with Show Sheen and we are good to go!

Suave. Cheap, smells good and works well. Overall shampoo first and rinse - then apply lots of conditioner to mane and tail and let soak. While that is happening, squirt some more conditioner into a small bucket and add water to make a light rinse of sorts. I then slowly poor that down their topline from behind their ears to their tail - and let that soak for a few minutes as well. Then rinse everything off - and you have a shiny, clean horse that smells good!
