I thought this was interesting.

Venus is 5 this year. Her grandsire is JTR Loud & Clear, a very famous appy. Until recently she's been pretty much a solid bay. This winter she is getting more and more white. She didn't have this much roaning last winter.

You can see the beginning in 2004 (left), but it is quite vibrant now (right) in her winter woolies.

I have pics of her sire, JTR Loud & Clears Premierr, and she is probably going to end up like him.

How cool is that? You just gotta love these appys and their wild colors and long term changes.

This actually gives me hope. I have a solid black little stallion who at 3 is still solid black... mom was an appy though. I asked someone who said that since he has no mottling on his face, and his hooves are solid, he probably won't change.

I asked about the fact that he has WILD mottling INSIDE his mouth. His gums, tongue, etc... are weird looking, lol, when I first saw it when he was a baby I thought he was sick. LOL They said, no, probably not.

But seeing your girl, (no mottling on the muzzle, or eyes) gives me some hope of seeing a change at some point in my boy. He does have the 'appy' eye. The scalara thing.

Your horse reminds me so much of one of ours. When we bought her she was a beautiful light bay and when she turned 3 years old she started spotting out. Now she is a really loud appy. Her first baby was a very loud silver buckskin appy. I love appys because you never know what they might do. Aubrey

My creme buckskin mare has that mottling on her privates and on her mouth and eyes with striped hooves but it skipped a generation. I had been told it didn't but I am looking at it

The only sign is that we're getting impatient here. And we're afraid that she may fool us this year and go 336 days instead of the 306 she did last time. sigh

OK....Desirees filly is Grey- she will go white all over. Your filly looks to have the Appy roaning thing going on, which is a minimal characteristic.

I do not care for it myself, but then I'm not an Appy fan at the best of times so I'm not the one to ask

If I am going to have an Appy I do like spots, I'm old fashioned that way

The fact that the Grandsire was a loud Appy will make little or no difference.

Anyway, she's a pretty girl without the spots so what does it matter??

I have to tell you though a mare I know had less characteristics than yours and threw the WILDEST coloured colt to a solid stallion I have seen for a long time!!!!!

Appy is more than bright visual color, as long as they have the characteristics. You can find some of the best color producing broodmares who sport white sclera, striped or amber hooves and heavy mottling hiding behind solid coats or solid appearing coats, a little frost or a little roaning sometimes gets overlooked. An appaloosa does not have to be wild colored or even colored for that matter. If this mare already had the characteristics she was already an Appaloosa she didn't turn into one when her coat started to color.

Yes, I think I said that- I know of one mare who is characteristics only who is a genetic Appy- BUT to my mind, if it does not have the pattern it is not Appy.

I am all for people recognising patterns etc, and to call a horse with two hind socks a genetic Tobiano would be perfectly correct.

I am worried though, that people may get the idea that Appy can "hide" or "skip".

If this mare was solid before, and is now Apping out, I think that would a very correct description.

It is only in hindsight that we can say she obviously was Appy before.

Oh, I don't know much about appys. But I do know... now shhhhh....don't tell Venus.... that I don't really like the looks of appys either.... Venus would snub me (or worse) if she heard me say that... so PLEASE! don't tell her!

Appy patterns can be so amazing! I know of a pure black foal that was born to a black mare and a black leopard stallion (big horses) . He was sold, and when I saw him as a 3 yr. old I just couldn't believe it!! He had turned leopard!!! :new_shocked: He hadn't had a characteristic at all up until he sold at a year old.

So, Tami, don't give up yet on your horse with the white sclera.

The problem seems to be black..it hides Appy characteristics as it is such a strong color.

I have a 4 yr. old colt that was born pure black, but with all characteristics. He now has some white hairs all over..including his mane and tail. But, for the last 3 years, when the sun hits him just right, you can see spots all over his rump! It is rather strange..black on black...but when you see it, it is very appearent that he IS spotted .

I also have a full sister to him that was born black with characteristics and a quarter sized black spot (again the black on the black) on her side. Now, as a 2 yr. old, she has a huge amount of roaning , and that thin, Appy tail..and it is all white at the top! She has a lot of white in her mane too. I can't wait until she sheds this year.

Their sire is Windy in my avatar..who I believe to be homozygous for black as he has thown 10 out of 10 foals with black base...and their dam is a solid liver chestnut who has a thumbprint sized star.

There are many breeds of horses that have similar spotting, it isn't just an Appaloosa thing.
