I don't show any dark horses. Weird to think! Haha!

Anyways, I know people with black horses use listerine to wipe them down just before the show ring. Makes them shiny and keeps the dirt off. I use that blue hair gel stuff for the noses. My buckskin has a dark nose and it really makes it shine. So does baby oil gel.

What types of products are you inquiring about? Feed supplements? Shampoo? Groom products?

I think ground flax seed really brings out the shine and bloom (and for gold toned horses, enhances color).

I use the Double K Black Knight Shampoo (use gloves).

I also feed BOSS (black oil sunflower seeds).

Try to keep them in the shade during daylight, and let them out at night.

I LOVE flax seed, it does wonders. Makes them shine from the inside-out! I could really tell that my flax seed was working, when my new filly came home. Her coat compared to my guys that have been on flax seed for months now, there was a BIG difference. I definately recommend the flax seed. (I am assuming BOSS does the same thing....)

I also like to use this cream called cholesterol...It is a product that african americans use for there hair. But for horses, after a clip job, you smear it all over them, wait 10 minutes and then rinse off. It makes them look nice and dark, not that "faded" look after just clipping them. --only use it on dark horses though

Listerine also works! Just rub it on with a towel or soft brush.

And the worst look in the ring (IMO) is that sun bleached look... my horses stay in all day and get turned out when the sun goes down. It works

I second the recommendation for "Cholestorol". We also use it on our horses after a clip

BOSS is amazing for Mingus (bright blood bay) but doesn't give such visible results on my other horses...not to say that it doesn't benefit them healthwise...

Shampoo: Citrishine (which I use for my own hair) works great on everyone, making their hair soft and shiny.

Conditioning: I've yet to find anything that beats Cowboy Magic. Again, it gives the most visible results on Mingus' glossy black mane and tail, but for everyone it is great for keeping mane and tail tangle-free and preventing breakage.

Sadly, considering I love long, thick manes and tails, Mingus just doesn't grow that much of either. I tried supplementing his great diet (LMF, BOSS, beetpulp, excellent quality orchard grass hay) with biotin, yet all it did was make his body coat grow longer, which I didn't want!

Cross my fingers, but so far Scarlet's white spots and tail seem to clean up shiny white, not yellowish. We'll see if this was a fluke or darned good luck for me. She loves to roll in the mud, so right now it's hard to tell she's even pinto!

I love to trawl through the cosmetic section at Fred Meyer and WalMart, checking out inexpensive hair products. I LOVE Pink (mink oil) spray...LOVE Shine (a pommade for African American hair), but you must rinse it out immediately, as it dries the skin and hair.

Just For Men is great for touching up sun fade, but I'd rather do a horsey comb-over...

grooming, another question...... my mares mane and tail underneth are black, but on top there lighter, now should i dye the top black too? or no?

Our first show is April 19th (?) or a date neat then. I was not planning to go as they dont offer shetland classes but will be taking two colts. Just bought them up to the barn today, we have a ways to go :DOH!. They are palomino though.

Im trying flax see this year, a friend gave me the hook up locally
