I'm hoping you'll get some answers soon. I'm keeping you and your little filly in my thoughts and prayers.

Calcium deficiencies can make a horse seem drunk and dazed. They will sway their head back and forth. And they stagger as they walk.I don't think it would explain the fever but maybe there are two different problems involved.

Good luck.

Lisa, we had a yearling filly with West Nile a couple of years ago, and she started off just acting lethargic, and kind of walking stiff. We took her to the vet (who's wonderful), thinking maybe she was foundering. She had no fever, was eating and all the plumbing working fine. Anyway, we brought her home, but the next day she got progressively worse. Back to the vet we went. Still no fever, eating, etc. But by then she was acting drunk, couldn't hold her head up. We left her at the clinic, and I said my goodbyes, cause I didn't think she'd see morning.

Doc didn't think she had WN, but did bloodwork, and sent the test off. He started her on a cocktail of antibiotics, and something for the neurological symptoms. Long story short, she was like her old self the next night! He kept her on the cocktail for 3 days, and she never showed another sign! By the time the test results came back, we were all shocked that it was positive!

I also had a baby with a sinus infection a few years ago. She had high fever, and snot on one side only. Nasty yellow green stuff!

: It took several rounds of antibiotics to finally get it cleared up. She never showed any neurological symptoms, though.

Sure hope you find out what's wrong with your little girl! Sometimes one comes along that just gets right into your heart!

A friend of mines mini contracted ryegrass staggers from our chaff, they were staggering around like they were drunk. Maybe something in your feed?

She also had a snakebite victim, had no co-ordination, could barley stand up, couldn't handle the light, her pupils were badly dilated..

Just another few ideas for you and i hope your baby improves real soon!

Thanks again for all of the good suggestions. We are checking on all of the options. The filly "Mena" seems better this morning. She is playing a little this morning and I have not seen any of the drunk staggers. She is off to the vet again to have more blood pulled and have the main vet check her. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the naxell is doing the trick and getting rid of the infection that was causing the staggers and seizures. i will keep everyone updated.

Thanks for all of the good thoughts and prayers.

We had a filly that had a high fever and was very lethargic, like yours, following a paste worming episode..

I dont know how the symptoms she was showing and the worming were connected, but after the 3rd day of the fever, I found a vet that gave me the right dosage of SMZ's to put her on. The fever backed off after that and she stayed on the SMZ's for around a week..

She fully recovered from what ever it was.

The first vet I had found, wanted to run all sorts of very expensive diognoistic tests on her to see if they could find the problem, as they were stumped as well.

But we opted to put her on antibotics insted.

Thank you all so much for all of your thoughts and prayers. It is amazing how fast foals can crash and also get better. "Mena" is doing so much better today. She is back to being her old bratty self and very upset that she did not get to go out and play with the other foals today. Her temp is down to 102. She has not had any more of the seizures/drunk staggers since last night. YEAH !!!!

Bonnie Fogg did a reading on her and she said that her sinuses were filled and that she had an earache and probably a tooth ache. Well - this morning she got lots of that yellow snot out of her nose (on me as usual) and I could hear her breathing better.

The vets said they thought that she might just have had a severe sinus headache and an ear infection which would have caused the intermintent staggers. We did run more tests to make sure - with more babies around I sure dont want all of them sick.

We are leaving her on the naxell and astro guard (Bonnie also said her tummy was upset). She has never quit eating or drinking so that was a definite plus.

Thanks again for all of the great suggestions. This forum is wonderful for help, and a great source of information to give your vet.

Lisa
