Don't you hate that little jerk of fear you get sometimes when you look out and think you have a dead horse, but he is really flat out asleep?

YES! it is a gut wrenching, stomach dropping, heart pounding terrible few moments!! My Image periodically does that to me. And when it's feeding time and all are coming but him laying there flat out unmoving repeatedly gives me that feeling. I have even gone right up to him calling him and he eventually lifts his head and slooooowwwly gets to his feet, yawns, stretches, and looks at me like " hey, you say somethin' ma?" He is a very sound sleeper and loves his nap time.

The worst time was one morning I went out to feed and Cloud was laying in his pen, looking completely dead. I opened the barn, banged around feed cans and called their names. He just laid there. I was already planning to call my son with his backhoe. Then Cloud raised up, looked around, as if to say, "Gosh! Is it morning already?"

Instead of giving him breakfast I was tempted to smack him, for scaring me like that!

I wonder if horses have REM sleep the way people do?

Too cute! I've looked out a few times and had to look twice to make sure they were just sleeping

It scares me too especially in the summer months when I bring up all of the mares and foals from the pasture to the dry lots in the evening and once in a while theres one foal that didnt come up and I search and search only to find it sleeping under the tree. I was also in a huge panic when a mare that was brought up my way to get bred by one of my studs was laying flat next to the fence in a dry lot I walked all the way up to her and had to touch her until she finally woke up! those moments really are gut wrenching!

Keep the pics coming!

It used to scare me whenever I'd see mine like that, but then I came to realize that Charm ALWAYS lays flat out, he's so lazy he's down more often than up. And Princess loves to lay down and snuggle with him, so she's down a lot too.

By the time Charm was maybe 4 months old, he had figured out that I thought sleeping ponies were the cutest thing in the world. I had trained him to lay down in my lap when he was 3-4 months. So even now as he's almost 2, he will use it against me while I'm training him. Cuteness always gets his way.

-"Back up Charmie"

-"No!"

-"Pleeeeease back up?"

-"I Don't wanna!"

-"Back up already!"

-*plop down*

-"Hey! You bad litte, evil little....little....oh precious boy okay snuggle time!"

(as you can see, my horse is smarter than me and his method works. spoiled much?

seriously, how could you possibly punish the adorableness?

Charm has also tried to use his plop down method on the shavings bag, when the shavings bag would not move where he wanted it too. The two got into a breif argument, before Charm pulled out the cuteness factor and proceeded to lay on the shavings bag. Needless to say, the bag had more willpower that I, and did not fall victim to such methods.

And yes, it scares the heck out of me when they are asleep and don't move! Although I use it to my advantage and go in for a big cuddle session!
