I was offered a beautiful 18 month old red standard poodle today, in exchange for one of my macaws. This really is a beautiful dog, with deep amber eyes, and the reddest red you would ever think possible on a poodle. I only have my one house dog now, Angel, who is our spoiled fur baby. She has been our only dog, since we lost our Shado, 17 months ago. If anyone has a standard poodle could you tell me about them? I had a small miniature poodle YEARS ago, but from what I have been told..the standards are nothing like the miniatures. Standards are suppose to be very mellow dogs is this true? My minature was nippy to kids and always had to be watched. Any info would be so helpful. I want to make the right choice for the welfare of the poodle along with Angel.and would love him, to be a member of our family, but I need to feel DEFINITE about this, and learn more about the breed. From what I have seen he is very sweet, and gets along great with the other dogs she has. He is a intact male, since he was going to be her next stud dog, and is crate trained. Here he would have the run of our house. I guess I just need to hear the "good and bad" from other owners, about standard poodles...besides there upkeep with clipping...lol... gee...from German Shepards (hubby had those when we first met) to Great Danes ( I had those!) to our labs, which we love dearly, and now Poodles..what a change!

i have raised and bred standards for a few yrs now they are excellent dogs, you can't beat them. I am in no way a poodle person but i was given a breeding pr and just fell in love with them, very smart quik learners obedient loyal they always let me know when someone is outside the house but in a low tone non obnoxious way. they are also the healthiest breed i have ever dealt with.. great with kids dogs cats ferrets and horses.. well they are just awesome dogs

I don't have Std Poodles, but they are fantastic dogs! And NOT at all like the miniature ones. They are very, very smart and lovable!!! Someone I knew had one as a 'farm' dog on a horse farm. It was a great dog around the barn.

I know a couple people who own/ have owned them and they have never said anything but wonderful things about the breed. I do know that they do well with more regular grooming though... they are much higher maintenance than a short hair breed if you've never had a longer hair breed...

I adopted an adult neutered standard male years ago.......cool dog.

I agree with what people have said here. Loyal, friendly, funny clown, loved the kids,

good with the cat, smart smart smart. We lived on a lake and he loved to

swim....I kept him tidy with the horse clippers, no fancy clips.

Only had problems with him with the horses. We had big guys and he'd run

in circles around them, barking and dashing at their faces. Horses treated

him as an annoyance, shake a foot at him, toss their heads - like GO AWAY!

Until one day one of the horses picked him up by the back of his neck and

tossed him on the ground and knocked him out. He woke up, shook his head

and went right back to it. No brain, no pain. I found him a new home with

a local gal that worked for the fire department. She had a spayed standard

female and he was happy as a clam with her.

I own two Toy Poodles, and two Toy Poodle x Miniature Dachshund mixes. I also groom dogs professionally and see lots of Poodles of all sizes. My dogs and most of the Poodles I have met are very, very smart and lovable, and they can be very versatile. I suggest you take the dog in on a trial basis if you're interested, and also research the cost of keeping the hair styled the way you like it if you aren't interested in learning to do it yourself.

I loved my standard poodle and will have another. She was so smart and a great farm dog. She hated being groomed but did tolerate it. They are a very smart dog and easy to train.

I do not have a standard poodle (although someday I might). I have two miniature poodles and one toy poodle at this present time. My vet told me long ago that poodles are the"second" smartest breed of dog. They are very loyal to their owners and usually get closest to "one" family member.

The grooming aspect of having a poodle is high maintenance if you want to keep them free of mats and looking their best. I'm a bit anal when it comes to my poodles and I bathe and clip them myself every two weeks. The only issue I have with my littler counterparts is the "yapping" - Oh for the Love Of God they drive me bonkers with the yap yap yap. Other than that they are great dogs and I would own a Standard in a heartbeat.

Best of luck to you!

My eldest poodle is going to be 15 in July so the lifespan is lengthy.

Although I'm pretty sure that larger dogs don't have the lifespan that smaller dogs have.

If you decide to get him please post photos! Standard poodles are gorgeous animals!

Here is a photo of me and Jake.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my standard poodle!! He is great with my kids and any that come over and visit. He plays good, and settles down when it is time. He is SMART!! I keep him in a puppy clip, real easy to keep clean. I did not want a big dog, never wnted a poodle, but last year he kind of landed here and I can not imagine not having one. He loves everyone, dog friendly, good in his crate, great with the run of the house. I guess the only down side is he takes up too much room on the bed! I would get another in a heartbeat.

Thanks everyone, you are all so helpful on this forum.

it sure sounds like everyone has nothing but good to say about poodles. Thats a big plus. I am not a "poodle person" either, but for some reson have always been drawn towards them. I was just kidding my hubby about 1 month ago, and have mentioned it in the past as well, that if we ever get another dog..I would like a standard poodle, and then yesterday this offer came along! So, its almost like it was meandt to be...lol... I have the clippers and know a little bit about clipping, since I clip a friends airedale for her, but just the basic clip...nothing fancy at all, but I really seem to be good at giving my hair a pompom at times!

I have pictures of him, and will ask her today if she would mind if I posted them. I have a feeling KJ is going to be joining us as a family, and yes, I would take him on a trial basis. I would love to see pictures of your poodles. Thanks again,

Corinne

I am also a professional groomer and I own my own business. Standards are awesome dogs! I've been through many years of obedience training with them also. Just smart and always wanting to please! However, If I weren't a groomer, I'd be able to feed 3 more minis a month for what the grooming costs! LOL!!!!

Lots of luck, and please post pictures if you decide to get him!

Our miniature poodle Phea Phea is very smart, rings a bell on the door to get out.

She never barks, has a really high pitch whine when she gets excited.

My groomer says she is too smart.

Shut her in a cage walked away and she was right behind her.

Forgot to tell her she needs a lock on the cage.

She is about 13" tall and boy can she jump

Here is Phea Phea...

Reble, In that first picture, she apears to be saying, "Yes, I AM the PRINCESS"!! She's beautiful!
Thanks you have that right, my husband and I never thought we would ever have a poodle, do not like the feel of the old shag rug, but she is a fast learner, got our hearts.

Mary, Phea Phea is beautiful. I will be getting KJ tomorrow, so I will post some pictures of him then. Now, I have to go and tell Angel she is getting a playmate.

I have a standard poodle (unaltered male), he is just over 1 yr old. Very smart, willing and eager to please, remembers everything, lovable, loyal (beyond belief!), natural gaurd dog, great with our 3yr old daughter since he was a pup, loves our house cat, plays perfectly with out two stallions and travels in a vehicle like a champ. He is not a show dog but we think he is just as good as one. His movement is always beautiful, froliky, upward tip-toes and prances when playing or running (he loves playing "catch the bubbles" with my 3yr old). I truly love the nappy, wool coat. Lots of grooming, clipping and care but totally worth it! (just ask my vacuum cleaner how we like that!) LOL! All kidding aside, we love Mr. Thomas our poodle....good luck with your decision in getting one. I have absolutely no regrets and would have another if I had more time.

Mary, I cant wait either. Its been YEARS since I had a poodle, and that was was a toy, not a miniature like I was thinking. I'm not crazy for his name either..but I think she pronounces it like Ca'Ge..I am not sure what his registered name is but I know his sires name is Bravo...lol... I have been doing alot of research on standards and cant really find anything negative about them. Sooooo..... I hope this all works out. I have a really nice pic of him now, I might ask for a photo edit on it.
