The Down Side of Owning Minis

I love my minis. I don't think I could get along with out them. However, last night my stallion got out and got into the feed. He took my almost full bag of SafeChoice and spilled it all over the ground. I am quite sure he ate way more than he should have. I took him and put him in his stall and fed the mares. I did let the mares out to clean up some of the feed I could not get picked up. As I figured each one according to their weight had had enough I put them away. Princess went right back into her pen with no problems. Next was Ellie. My problem child. I took ahold of her mane like normal and she started to go in the opposite direction. I had ahold with my left hand. She then turned quickly to the left to go into her pen and she tripped me up with her hind legs. I fell and really injured my knee, BAD. If she were a BIG horse I would have come no where near her hind legs to get tripped. So, this is just a warning. small horses can turn around at an arms length. I hope I will not have to have surgery.

It's definently a down side to horses period (big & small). Even the most tame equine can make a sudden unsuspecting move and their human gets in trouble. I hope your knee is okay and that you don't end up needing surgery.....

Just a thought for next time use a halter or lead rope to maintain a firmer control.

I'm so sorry. I've had those times where it just seemed like one thing led to another with the horses. I've not yet been injured...yet...as badly as when I had a riding horse, but I know the day is coming.

I hope you don't need surgery and I hope your stallion is ok.

While we're talking injuries, I'll add that I had a driving accident July 17 with a little newly gelded horse of mine who had not been in training long was but learning so fast and is so smart. we probably had him in the cart too soon at least for me who am not a seasoned driver ......having only driven very much my little Rambo for 20 years before he died last June. But anyway, something spooked him and we are not sure what even yet, and he took off like right out of a starting gate and was at a fast gallop before I knew what was happening and I could not stop him and knew the cart was going to tip over. It did and I fell out hard. Broke my collar bone (left clavicle) and one rib and had a HUGE bruise (hematoma)on my left side and a cut on my head with 4 staples. But I did manage to sit up and call my hubby who came the 13 miles to town in record time for him and took me to the ER (so avoided an ambulance

They ended up having to do surgery on the clavicle as it was far apart on the end and also splintered some.

But I am almost back to normal now and it is healing well. The cart and horse were not hurt thank goodness

Oh no! so sorry you hurt your knee, but yes mini's can hurt you and badly.

Several years ago I was clipping a mare my husband bought at auction and she kicked me in the shin. Ended up not being broken but I got phlebitis in one of the damaged veins. Hope your knee feels better soon.

Get some bio sponge for your stallion if you can. It sometimes can help you not get into a founder situation which can occur from feed overload..

Sorry you got hurt. I had a big dog trip me up and mess up my knee and wrist and shoulder once. Our love of animals can sure get us in trouble. I hope you avoid surgery!!!!

Sorry this happened to you. I would get the vet out asap to oil the stallion. I lost one of my first minis years ago to getting in the feed bin and not calling the vet out soon enough.

Sorry to hear you got hurt so badly Susan. As for Dusty, he is lucky I didn't just kill him (I wouldn't). He looked a bit bloated yesterday. But is fine today. As for my knee, I have not gone to the Unfortunatelyrtunitly it is cheaper to just go to the ER rather then it is to go to my DR, then she refers specialistecialest, then he does tests. Last night I was awake every 20-30 minutes. it has popped twice and felt better when it did. Maybe it is just dislocated. What ever it is I can't walk on it. I have to have someone come in and feed for me.

Sometimes we all forget that these little guys pack as much punch as a big horse and can turn on a dime. I find I have to keep reminding myself that, despite their small size, they are still horses and have to be treated the same as a 1200 lb horse. Soooo sorry about your knee. Knee injuries are the worst. I hope it doesn't end up needing surgery. Dang those tricky little minis!
