I just bought a new Andalusian gelding today and he has TMJ. Temporo-Mandibular Joints . Any one heard of it? Ways to treat it? Any one have hrses with it?

Ouch! I have never known an animal with it, but did know a person who suffered mightily with it. The pain was unbeleiveable at times...all the drugs she had to take to make it tolerable...I couldn't see how she could remain functional.

What have the vets had to say?? Can such a horse be ridden or driven?

Yes we have tons of info on it and know what it is and everything, his isnt bad, the only thing is he needs a hackamore. I have a mini who has it and i trained her to drive not knowing she had tmj but as soon as i found out by research ( vet doesnt even know what tmj is!) I idmetally stopped driving her. I will see what she does if i special order her a gumi bit. I only posted this topic for people that dont know and i will help them learn about it

I used to board in a barn where there was a half-Andalusian that had TMJ. They had the chiropractor working on him once a month. I don't know much about it, but if you have an equine chiropractor locally, I'd suggest that you give him a call. The horse that I mentioned was a show horse and was ridden in a regular bridle with no obvious problems.
