I have a 20 month old colt that I just noticed is toeing out on one of his front feet, he's never had an issue before now.

My farrier told me that alot of horses toe out between the ages of 1 and 3 years and then they straighten out. It's usually a growth issue, not a conformation issue. He said back feet are a different story.

I did a search online and found an article that says basically the same thing.

Does anyone have any experiences to share on horses you've had that have straightened up???

I had planned on keeping this colt intact as he is super duper nice, but obviously if this problem doesn't correct itself he will have to be gelded.

My farrier is trimming him to help fix the issue. But like I said this is a new thing that has happened in the last month or so, he's always been straight up until now.

I have been told and also experienced weanlings and young horses that toe out some, looking cowhocked to an extent, as they mature past the yearling age on up their hind legs pull back in. Some minis are born with small rear ends almost pointy (best way I can describe) as they fill out and build up muscles the legs do start to come back "in". This can also happen with the front legs as the chest fills out with muscle as they mature. A farrier or perhaps someone else can put this into better words than I for ya.

If "Fred" doesn't see this thread Pm her. I love having her for my farrier and she has done amazing things with my kids.

Thanks Everyone!!! :aktion033:

I gotta get that little booger to build some chest muscles, he definitely doesn't have much of any right now :bgrin

I have seen them go through changes as their chests build out. And, when you just try to visualize how their chest changes as they mature, you can kind of imagine the effect it can have on legs. I have one horse who was straight as can be but as he turned three, he began to toe out slightly (this is Derby). He's pretty much right on now, but boy did I used to worry. I would go to the stable way early in the mornings before shows and take a little off the outside to help him out for the show.

what about going wide in the hind end?? I have a commign 3 year old colt that is so much what i was looking for. i think he could be quite competitive in halter..but his only flaw is he tracks a bit wide behind i noticed last year..not super wide..but a little. We trimed him up to see if we could help it. he had attrocious feet when i got him last summer so we assume thatm ay have been part of it..but is it possible that he'll go narrower again or is wide one of those type of things that doens't really change?

I have seen several that there back feet twist in when they walk, is there a correction for this?
