I'm going nuts trying to keep track of vaccines around here - something's got to give!

Between the horses we've had for a while and then the new ones, plus some are show, some are for breeding - I'm totally confused! So, if you don't mind taking the time, would you tell me:

What you vaccinate for?

Frequency?

Is it different for show horses vs breeding mares?

What about babies? - who gets what when?

I really want to get everyone on the same schedule if possible. I don't have a software program to track this and between vet checkups, wormings, trims, shots, etc. I'm losing my mind! :new_shocked: :new_shocked:

Thanks in advance for helping to salvage what little sanity that remains.

Well I don't have show animals so your vaccinating program will be different.

However........here's what I give, once a year...........

3 way sleeping sickness (eastern, western, venzuelan)

Tetanus

Flu/Rhino

West Nile Virus

Strangles

Rabies is done every three years.

According to my vet foals should be done as follows.........

If the mare was vaccinated before foaling then the foal gets it's Tetanus plus 3 way sleeping sickness at 6 months old followed by the booster 3 weeks later.

At 10 or 11 months old the foal gets it's Flu/Rhino, followed by the booster 3 weeks later.

For foals, Strangles vaccine should be done at 4-6 months.

I don't vaccinate the foals for WNV during their weanling year because they get their immunity for their first 4 to 6 months from their vaccinated Mothers. By the time they are that old mosquito season is pretty much over.

I've heard for show horses that you should revaccinate every 3 or 4 months for flu/rhino, I know everyone does it differently though.

Hope this helps!!!

It does, thanks! I too heard about the revaccination for show horses. The trainer we used last year just has us do it again a few weeks before Nationals.

That's correct that rabies in horses should be done every year. The research is not done to prove otherwise. The vaccine is cheap and the disease is devastating for your horse, yourself and your children.
