What a day yesterday

I went out yesterday afternoon and (I need glasses for far away but only wear them to drive)thought there was a dog chasing after our 2 mares. They would chase it a little then it would chase after them when they turned and ran

It turned out to be a very young Fawn (so cute) but it had 2 collars on a flea collar and regular like dog collar. It saw us coming and came running to us like a dog. So cute. I picked it up and put it in one of our empty horse stalls. and we started making calls

It was trying to nurse off our mare but we don't have any wet mares this year.

Found out being late saturday everything was close including the SPCA she drank some water but would not eat anything I was worried she would starve

so found out the game warden would come out Monday if she wasn't dead by then they would take her and shoot her. as she had been domesticated.

It is illegal to have a pet deer in NJ

So with alot of help we found a rescue 2-1/2 hrs away that would take her.

So we took her there. So excited they have others her age and once they check out her condition they will turn her out with them. I had to get her in a dog crate to take her there no easy job she was quite upset ...but so glad we took her sounds like she will have a good life. Tired but felt good to save her.

I understand y the dnr will put them down but still hate it anyway. Good for you to find a rescue! All creatures need a 2nd chance!

That fawn is too young to be eating on its own. That's probably why it was trying to nurse and wouldn't eat anything. (BTW... deer shouldn't be given hay... they can't digest it properly).

Those are the neatest pictures! You did a wonderful thing by finding a rescue for it. You'd think the DNR would try to do the same, instead of just saying they'd shoot it. Stoopit DNR.

Wow! Isn't that a tiny baby for this time of year? (I thought an app. 4 month old baby would be bigger.) What a cutie!

Im sure who ever put the collars on her had good intentions of perhaps feeding and caring for her...who knows they may have called DNR too and was told the same thing and decided to try to help. They may have not realized how high even a baby like this can jump and it escaped.What ever the story...he is one smart little fella to find your house!! thanks for helping him. I hope they keep you updated..let us know!

So glad you found her the right place. Congrats and she is so so cute.

Just to give some information.

What I know about Fallow deer

Fallow deer are on their own at 4 months and sold.

Eating and drinking on their own.

We have fallow deer and they are pulled at a couple of days old and bottled fed lamb re-placer, to have them tame for new owners, so not too young at all. A lot of work feeding every two hours.. we will be having our first fawn this coming summer, if everything goes well. Our buck was bottle fed and we got him at 3 months and bottle fed for another month so he got to know us and is so trusting, our doe was not bottled fed, we got her at 1.5 years old, she was going to slaughter.

Dream Catcher will not let us touch her, but walks around us and can hand feed. She has been with us now for 5 years.

The buck cannot get enough attention and loves to be touched all over.

Prince Rupert is a year now, and hope they breed this September - October and have a young June - July
