What size will foal be when born

Hi. My mare will be due in feb-march and it will still be very cold here. I want to get a blanket for the foal but I am not sure what size to get. I feel the foal will be kind of little as the mare is 33" and its her first and the sire is only 28-29". I have found several foal blankets but I dont know what size to get. most of the blankets give a measurement from the chest to the butt. So what do you think the measurement of the foal will be? What is the average for foals?

I have had foals born at 16" and foals born at 23" all to mares that were around 33" and bred to 31-32" sires. Although they get dirty quickly I have 3 foal blankets from I think Ozark that are fleece that I like. and have been able to double them up when needed.

same here, you won't know what size the foal will be until it arrives, so we keep a selection of sizes and if it's really cold can layer them

I don't want to steal this thread but does anyone know if there is a place online that has a pattern for foal blankets? I would like to make some as I just might be having a winter foal and it gets flippin cold here in the north!!

: I love to sew and would like to make them myself but have nothing here at all for a pattern as I don't blanket any of my gang.

The Foal blankets that I have were bought from Prime Design They are on there site for $13.95 At that price it might make a good pattern

The fleece dog blankets work ok, for a pattern you just need to increase the depth by a few inches, the dog ones seem to be shorter in the depth but fit ok otherwise.

I wouldnt mind getting a pattern to make blankets. It sounds wiser to just make them myself if I need different sizes. Expecially if its going to be growing and still needing a blanket.

I made mine by going off a small dog blanket pattern I had made for my poodle oh heck 25 years or better ago, still have it and use it on the foals, that one I made out of a pair of jean cut offs after I made shorts of the jeans.

So let me find some pictures and take some measurements and send you them, I will PM you when I get it done.

I have a load of waterproof dog blankets that I have bough over the years.

I rarely have to blanket foals but I would rather pop one on and be sure than have the baby cold.
