My husband is so hard to get out of bed in the morning to go to the barn that I think I may try another method. He makes me late every day. Right now, I'm doing the "Sweetie, it's time to get up," method. I'm thinking of trying something else. So...what is more humane? A butt rope or a rattle can?

No, he's a male so the butt rope might give him other ideas that lead to staying IN bed. The rattle can would be much safer but if you're going for the "carrot or the stick" approach I'd try brewing coffee or slapping the gelding shears in your palm!

Lunge whip? Maybe not.

I try to use positive reinforcement when possible with mine. I get the same in return.

Try a bucket of grain, or clicker training.

You could try what I used to do. I would get up early and bake something, fix his coffee, after he got out of the shower his cloths would be warmed from the dryer so he felt warmed by getting dressed. Then fix a lunch that everyone around him will want. They get up and go to work very easily then.

...gelding shears!! Oh my gosh...what a hoot...now thats funny!!

But I think just showing him this thread may work!! Now that he has his own horse I would think he'd be excited to get to the barn...

I think you are clearly forgetting the easiest and most obvious...

LOL! Great suggestions! We work nights and usually don't get home until around 4 in the morning. With the heat as bad as it's been, we have to get up just a few hours after bedding down for the night to get anything worthwhile accomplished with the horses. It's been a little tougher on him than me. I try to be understanding, but some mornings it can be irritating. It was nice to vent to you guys. I got smiles out of this all day. lol

Throw a few frozen marbles in the bed. They can't get away from them so they have to get up. A friend of mine used this with her kids that would not get up for school.

Uw, I like it! Bet it would have worked with me when I was impossible to rouse as a kid.

I showed hubby this thread and he says that the thinks that the cattle prod would be the best idea. Not exactly sure how to take that....ROFL!!!

PS Hubby said frozen beebees work for the marble idea too. lol

I "send in the dogs!" When I need to get my hubby up (and yes, he works nights also and doesn't get to bed much before 3 or 4 am so I understand completely) - I tell the dogs to "Go get Daddy!!!" -- the whole pack of them races into the bedroom and jumps on the bed and does their kissy-face thing -- pretty hard to sleep thru 4 Havanese and 1 Boxer licking you and crawling all over you!

Works for getting him out of the shop too!
