I am curious as to how many older horses show in fun shows or registered shows and what classes they are used in.

I have a 17 year old gelding we show in halter, showmanship, color, jumping, and barrels/poles.

My sr stallion hit the ring for the 1st time ever last year 7.5 yrs old. He has been a breeding stud all his life and you can tell when he hits the ring yelling and wanting to hump everything in sight!

My sr broodmare is 10 and in the ring as well.

Our Sr. Herd Stallion Cherryville's Rio De Oro went to his first show at the age of 12 and won Supreme Halter horse at the Ft. Worth Stock show AMHA miniature show. Then a couple of years ago, our farm manager talked Cindy into letting him show Rio (which I could not believe, as she is so protective of him) at ONE show with no fitting as far as round penning etc. as Jose had never gotten to show him and wanted to. LOL

He was 17 or 18 at that time if I remember right and he won Grand Champion Stallion, while one of his daughters won the surpeme that day at the SWMHC Dallas AMHA show. Fun day to say the least.

It is always a lot of fun to take the old guys & girls out every once in a while to let people see them strutting their stuff so to speak. Some of them like Rio just love the attention and love the show ring. More power to them.

I've got one mare who is 14, so far I've only shown her locally but I plan on trying AMHA next year with her. She can keep on showing as long as she enjoys it, next year or the year after may be her last for showing. She always places well at the local show, and is jumping 36 inches (she's 30"), loves liberty, trail, hunter, jumping. And she's being trained to drive. Oh, she's a rescue, too!

My other mare is 11, and she will definitely continue to show for many years, as long as she too enjoys it. She's got so much spunk in her, she acts like a 2 year old!

Rabbit took his last Championship at 25.

He was last shown two years ago and won a mixed height Veteran class and took reserve Champion.

He is now 30 and if there were a show close enough that he did not have to travel far I would show him this year!

Personally my oldest horse was 10. I currently have a 7YO stallion out with a trainer.

I knew a lady who took a gelding - FAF Gold Scotch - out when he was well into his 20's and won every time.

I'm glad you guy's address this my husband and I were just talking about it the other day and wondering about it. Our oldest is 5. I'm 57 so I think I'll wear out before they do. My husband said; well I don't know about you but I NEVER could give them up just because they quit showing. I said; oh me neither. He said; well then we'll make yard pets out of them because we can't give them up we love them to much they're part of our family and just because your not showing doesn't mean you need to give them up. So that's what we decided to do after they're done showing. But at least now I know they can show for awhile. Thanks guys for talking about it. TJ

I havent personally shown an old horse but our neighbor showed her stallion that is 18 this year and got first and second in hunter, placed in jumper, placed in 3 driving classes, and placed in halter, I dont remember the exact placings. Old horses are still just as good as the young ones in my opinion!

I showed my 22 year old mare in an open show, her class had about 10 quarter horses in it, she won that halter class and then won Res Grand of the show. This photo was at that show. She had been grand and supreme at AMHA shows when she was much younger.

I love it when the old guys can still strut their stuff out there. I also prefer to show an older seasoned driving horse, the ones that love to be there.

Fun to read all of your replies about your horses!

Our oldest we have shown is 5 years old. But, that is just because we have just gotten started.

We bought a gelding almost 2 years ago and he is now 11. Last year was his first appearance at nationals at the age of 10. He shows successfully in halter and driving. We plan on taking him to nationals again this year.

One of the gelding in Jan Tobey's (Mulithitch) 4 up hitch is 24 this year and if you didn't take him he would be highly upset. He is still going strong and lives up to his name on ocassion--Little Bit O Trouble.
