I hate all these vaccines/chemicals, etc. But, I know some are necessary. My vet started ordering only 5-way, but after reading a bunch on here and looking into things, I asked them if they would order 3-way for me, and they did. We also do rabies (law) and WN (they highly recommend that).

Some of my horses never leave the farm; the ones that do are not going where there are other horses. Other horses never come here.

Shots were done today.

Which do you give yours?

Here all my horses get the 5-way plus rabies and WNV. But I also have show horses.

If I showed, I'd definitely give the 5-way, plus more. I figured that was a given.

Mine get no vaccines. I have given rabies in the past, as we have varmints here. This year is time for another rabies and I am trying to decide what to do.

I have attended a show in the past, and mine go into public but generally do not mix with other equines. I have neighbors with horses; one is always buying/selling so I have concerns about that. But no fences are shared.

I do not breed.

Karla, mine that don't show get rabies and the WNV combo shot (which is basically WNV + 3 way). The flu / rhino do not last very long so to give those once or even 2x a year is kind of pointless. I'd give the flu/rhino to horses who showed or were going to be around strange horses but for horses that stay home, there's not a lot of point in doing that shot since they're not likely to be exposed during that 6-8wk window that it actually works.

We give 5 way as some of our horses show and other horses come here for friends to pick up that are going to Canada. We give rabies yearly and have given west Niles in the past and strangles by nose for horses going to shows.

Our vet recommends the 5-way, plus WN and rabies. Given yearly.

Only a few of ours show, the rest are only on the farm, but we do have critters (racoons, foxes, etc.), and there are other horses in the area. We did give the intranasal strangles for a few years, but there have been no cases in our area, so didn't feel we needed it. And there is no Potomac fever around, so we don't give that either.

I'd rather be safe with the vaccines, than sorry for not giving!

I give a 4-way (tetanus, flu, EEE, WEE) and that's it (no rabies or WNV).

All mine get flu, rhino ,tetanus,Encephalo- plus rabies and West NileWe do shots ourselves and space them out over several weeks.I do not use any more Ft.Dodge vaccines.Too many bad reactions.2009 the only Ft.Doge I used was Rabies and had 50% bad reactions.Only Intervet for me -no bad reactions.

Karla, since you aren't showing, I would recommend vaccinating for EEE/WEE/Tet (which is what I would assume your 3 way is), WNV, and Rabies. With mosquitoes, it doesn't matter if your horse never leaves the place, they are still at risk for EEE/WEE/WNV. Tetanus and Rabies are basically non-treatable, fatal (well, Tetanus can be recovered from...but it's pretty bad) diseases and can be transmitted to your horse at home, so it's important to vaccinate for those too (Rabies importance can be variable depending on where you live). Flu and Rhino are more 'non-essential' than the others...especially if you have a closed herd and are not interacting with other horses.

We give the whole gammit. 6ways, WN, Potomac and rabies. We show and breed. When we took a few year break from breeding and showing, we used 4ways and WN as well as rabies.

All of our horses show and we give the 5-way, Rabies, WNV and Strangles. We have one, possibly 2, horses that wont be showing this year, but they are still getting "the works" with shots.

My horses all get 3-way, WN, Rabies and Potomac Fever vaccines. Pretty costly, although a sick or dead horse is worse.

I may have no choice this year, as I am now retired and on a fixed income, to only vaccinate with 3-way, Rabies and Potomac. That would save me $220.

The vet said last year she only heard of 2 cases of WN up here.

I have never asked about the 5-way.

Our horses only get rabies because unfortunately it's the law.

I would definitely never give a combination vaccine.

At Timberview here we give FT Dodge, Innovator 4 way and Rabies. Think that is all we will do this year. Did the West Nile last year but thinking maybe we won't do it again. Have also done Strangles nasal also. Trying to cut back a bit on expenses this year . Some times I worry we are vaccinating these minis too much. Rabies we do not only for the sake of the horses but for the visitors that we have to our farm.

Thanks for the replies. You've helped me feel like I made the right decision asking the vet to order the 3-way.

The manufacturer of the vaccine suggested a booster for the horses, but the vet, although doing her job and being clear about what the suggested directions are--said if they were her horses, she probably wouldn't bother. So, no boosters.

She's trying to convince me to give my own shots--since the horses are easy to handle. But, it makes me nervous.
