Okay, have a problem. I just got my filly from Texas. She was wormed with Safeguard (supposidly) before she got her. She's extremely wormy and has tape worms. I wormed her again with pyrantel.

I took her to the vet today. He said to worm her once a week for 6 weeks with a wormer called Quest Plus. Well after talking with a mini friend, she said she's never heard of such a diagnosis and that Quest would kill her.

So now I don't know what to do. What should I worm her with? How often? I don't want to her die becuase she's really wormy. She's about 20 lbs under weight. She's 4 months old. She still has energy. Help....

:aktion033: Yeaaaah who ever your mini friend is, is very smart about the quest thing. I think there something that we do here every few months is do 5 days straight of SafeGuard, I think what ever schedule you end up doing Safeguard is one of the safest things out there. I'm not really great with the worming stuff as I don't really understand that well yet but I know this is what we do here. So I hope this helps

There have been some excellent discussions on deworming on this forum - do a search and I am sure you will find them. But - in the meantime - do not use Quest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And if your vet told you to use it - I would be looking for a different vet - one that knows about minis - as obviously your vet is not up to date on the minis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG Never Quest ever.

I gather your vet is not a Mini vet, if he was he would know about

Quest. Consider a new vet too.

First off you don't want to give her so much it kills off all the worms at once

for fear of impaction.

You are new here but go to the main forum page and click on

The Best pf Miniature Horse Forum

there is a thread there about worming mini's, lots of good information.

If you have any questions after that do not be afraid to ask here, everyone is willing

to help you with your little girl.

I don't post much but I sure do read everyday.

I agree.........NO QUEST. If you read the fine print on the box there is finally a warning printed on there. If you like your vet overall -- point that out to him or her.

A 5 day purge with either Safeguard or Panacur should be safe. And then a month later start her on a Ivermectin/Strongid rotation - 6 to 8 weeks apart.

Kuddos to you for asking and trying to learn what is best for your little girl!

Thanks for the advice! I think a safeguard routine would work for her. What about a daily wormer added to her feed?

Hard to find a vet around here. I have to travel a half an hour to get to mine. The rest are hours away. Unfortunately happens with rural areas. He's a good vet, just not familiar with minis.

Okay, did a little research on the forum board. Found a great worming schedule for Fendendazole 5 day, etc. Now, should I wait to do this since I have given her wormer already. Like say a month or can I start her right off?

Ten day wait is fine- Fenbendazole is a very mild, very safe wormer.

I wanted to add that after your Panacur or Safeguard treatment, I would deworm for tapeworms with a product that contains Praziquantel for tapeworms such as Equimax or Zimectrin Gold.
