I have always gotten different replies to this question, and probably always will...But just how safe is it in your opinion to worm a mare in foal???? Theresa

According to our vet, the Ivermectin products are very safe for a mare in foal, and we have wormed them the month, and even a few weeks before foaling with no problems.

We also worm right after foaling, so that the foal also receives a dose.

We never stop worming the mares. Everyone on our property is wormed every 8 weeks, without fail. Most are safe for pregnant mares.

I would also like to ask when is the right time to do the 4 day panacur wormer (safeguard) and is that to include babies and pregnant mares too??

Five day for Panacur (Fenbendazole)

It is a safe as houses- you have to actually drown the horse in it to do any harm!!

It is also safe for foals, from ten days.

Ivermectin I use for foals from six weeks on.

I do the Fenbendazole five day twice a year, in Autumn and in Spring, it clears out encysted small redworms, and they are the worms that will REALLY do some damage.

I also use it throughout pregnancy, I don't skip any wormings, would rather double up than skip. I also worm on the day of foaling as well and rarely have any foal heat diarrhea.

Foals begin getting wormed on their own when they are just about a month old. I also rotate different wormers or rather add them to the regimen per my vet's recommendation.

Liz
