Thyroid and r.equi issue in broodmare?

Hi guys! :saludando: Gosh, it's been awhile since I've been on here. I have a big favor to ask of everyone. I have a big mare that's been a broodmare since she was 4 (she's 8 now) due to a pasture injury as a baby. She's had 4 wonderful foals for me, although sadly we lost her 2006 foal...

    Best Friends

What a great thread!! So many great stories... I met my best friend when I was in 9th grade. We were friends, but it wasn't until grade 11 where we really becamce best friend. We stayed in the same city for University, but each went to a different school. Her parents moved before her 2nd...

Lump on mare's throat area. Thyroid maybe?? Any other ideas?

Her "lump" looks very simliar to what my colt was born with this year. His was enlarged thyroid because his dam has hyperactive thyroid (which we didn't know until we pulled blood after the colt was born, normal T4, but elevated T3). The colt came back with slightly elelvated T4. He has no...

    Enlarged thyroid in newborn?

Last Thursday my (big horse) mare foaled a HUGE colt. He was 43" at birth, and quite hefty. He was hard to pull out, took two of us. The moment he was born I noticed that his thyroid was quite enlarged. When the vet came to do his check up the next morning, she confirmed the abnormal...

    Getting another dog

I recently had to put down my beloved Springer Spaniel, Wally, due to cancer. He was in surgery, and it looked like we would be able to remove to tumour, but he started to bleed, and unfortunately there was nothing the vets could do. He was only 3. I am absolutely devastated, and cannot talk...

    Sales contracts

I was wondering if any of you could share copies of your sales contracts with me. I sold a foal on terms. The baby will stay with me until 1/2 of the balance is paid off, and then he goes to his new home. I've checked out references, and he is going to be very close to good friends of mine...

    Weanlings

I keep my waenlings on big un until they are 6 months old. If I wean them at 6 months, I will leave them on it until they are comfortable being on their own, and really settled into their new life. Too many stresse to swap feeds when they are swapping lifestyles!!

    Chasing down your money...

She is too far for me to go and pay her a visit. She is in NB, and I am in Ontario. I did a little searching, called a friend (where the mare was boarded) and actually got the contact info of the mares new owners. I really feel pretty stupid for letting the mare go so far, and losing touch...

    Chasing down your money...

I sold a mare back in Feb to a wonderful lady. She really didnt have much money, so I let her do payments. I gave her two months to try the mare, and then another month to pay her off (I sold her for $500 Canadian....so I thought this was plenty of time...) She conatcted me to tell me that...

    Intoducing our new foal.....

Here are some pictures of our last foal of the year. Dolly was born Saturday night at 11:30. The vet gave her a clean bill of health today. She is exactly what I wanted, chestnut filly with white on her face. Her dad is silver bay with no white, and her mom is chestnut with a small star...

    It's a girl!!

Diamond showed ALL the signs today, and gave us a beautiful filly at 11:30pm on Saturday evening. The birth went very fast, and baby seems to have lots of energy and character. She is a little slow to nurse. Mom is having a bit of a rough time with cramps, and her udder is FULL and dripping...

    Biting, kids and warnings.........

We have a boarding barn. and while most people that come around are knowledgable, we do get ther odd friend that tags along who has no idea what they are doing. We have a sign at the front of the barn by the entrance way that says "Please don't feed fingers to the horses" It gets noticed by...

Look who's helping me with Mare Stare!

I'm totally with you on the mare stare. Long nights staring at the tv screen, and long days at the horseshows trying to nap in my chair while...why did I have to choose the night shift?? Tonight HAS to be the night, she hasn't finished her grain, she's dripping milk....I wonder who will get to...

She's waxing, but is it too early??

According to my breeding dates, Diamond is somewhere between day 303 and 317 days. Last year she had her foal in March at 329 days. I worry that it is too early since she held to 329 last year (although is was a VERY tight squeeze). She's been waxing on and off for a week (had was in the pm...

    Question about Tiny Tim

I went to a feed seminar over the winter, and they were talking about foals easting their mom's poop. This seminar was offered by Purina, and they had some interesting views. They did research and found that a foal's "foal heat scours" were not cuased my a mare's foal heat, but by them eating...

Image is resolving her twin issue..,,!!!

A friend of ours found an extra skull after her mare foaled. She had a healthy little welsh pony colt, and when they examined the placenta, they found a small skull. The vet figured it was a twin that was incompletely re-absorbed. The mare is fine, with no ill effects, and is confirmed in...

    They're home!!!

Well, they are finally home!! I had never actually seen my foal (excpet pictures), so combined with the fact that he has a broken nose, I had no idea what to expect. I am happy to report that I am just absolutely IN LOVE with this foal. He is such a great kid. I am really unhappy with the...

    Raising an orphan foal

We've decided to separate my mare anf oal because of my mare's agressive behaviour towards her colt. He is 3 weeks old, he's been stepped on too many time to count, pushed through the fence by his momma, and the last straw was when she kicked him in the face, breaking his nose. He will have a...

    Agressive mare with her foal...

I am NOT going to be using this mare as a broodmare anymore. It is more than obvious now that she no longer is being clumsy. Many people told me to give her a few weeks to settle into motherhood, she was just getting used to it, etc. The breeding lease is not going to be continued, it is just...

    Agressive mare with her foal...

Thanks for the link Marty, I will look into that. I know that the vet looked her over. Once at birth, and again a day after she started her bad momma behaviour. He did not find anything, I assume he would have been thorough, but you never know... After thinking it over, I am going to go down...
