    Weaning time

She will be nose to nose with him the entire weaning process. I put the babies in the stall next to the mare, and turn out in the paddock next to the mare. The only thing they can't do is nurse. I start slow. He is 4 months old now, and I will start taking him out of the stall to groom him. They...

    Weaning time

That's been my experience in the past. Not this girl. She wants all the babies. I wouldn't trust her not to steal someone else's foal. On the other hand she would make an excellent nurse mare.

Pregnant,or maybe Haybelly. What are your guesses ?

That's exciting! I can't wait for spring! Or more likely summer, if she is early.

What color do you think he is?

The mystery is unsolved. This little stinker is looking chocolate, I was certain that he would be. But the test results are negative, the mare doesn't have silver. I've really got no idea at this point.

Pregnant,or maybe Haybelly. What are your guesses ?

That test is clear as mud. The good news is that if she is that early, the vet should be able to get a good ultrasound. And if she is that early it shouldn't be a pregnant belly. A little light exercise would do her some good, and you might try worming her again with a different dewormer.

    Scaly hooves

The farrier says it's just because it's been so dry here. He said I can use some oil or sand it off and it won't hurt them any. And that it may start to flake off by itself now that it is raining.

    Weaning time

Hopefully next year there will be 2 foals to wean together. But this year, once again, the colt will be getting weaned without a friend. The foals don't seem to have much trouble with my weaning process, it's this silly mare. I sold the colt I posted about a few weeks ago, at over a year old...

    Scaly hooves

The vet says the farrier is my first call and he will be out in the morning. It looks like the cracking is deeper than I want to sand off.

Pregnant,or maybe Haybelly. What are your guesses ?

I know, it's so disappointing when you never find out. And how can you compare your mare to that one if you don't know what you are comparing to? You can always try the nail test, or the ring test (same thing) But my mare has always tested not pregnant, and I got 2 colts out of that.

allowing your horse to give kisses

They may be at the World show right now, it could take them a bit to get back. That's going on until this weekend.

Pregnant,or maybe Haybelly. What are your guesses ?

That needs to be a rule. If you ask if you mare is pregnant, you need to update the post once you know. 🤣

allowing your horse to give kisses

I hope it works, though I have a hard time believing that heartburn is causing you that much trouble. You might want to look up little america miniature horses, I think they are breeding the smallest. But that's tiny even for them. At that size you may have to give up the conformation and go...

    Rescued mini from killpen

I don't know. It's hard to tell by looks, especially if they have had foals before. I think that internal ultrasound is good for like the first 100 days. External ultrasound is better for the next 60 days, and after that it can be very iffy. Not totally sure about that, but that's the idea I...

Pregnant,or maybe Haybelly. What are your guesses ?

Well, that definitely could be a baby belly. But it's so hard to tell. First thing I would do is take a look at her udder. You should be able to take an educated guess on if she has foaled before by how it looks. If you stick your phone up under you should be able to get a good picture. That's...

What color do you think he is?

It's exciting and irritating at the same time. Just be a normal color you silly babies. But it was fun researching the bloodlines and trying to find pictures of horses to see what color they really are.

allowing your horse to give kisses

Even if it did come from a horse, I would think it's not too likely to happen every time you handle them. Maybe avoid kisses in the future. A lot of people seem to be having food issues lately. Lots of speculation about the cause, but they seem to get some relief from following assorted super...

allowing your horse to give kisses

I think it's going to be impossible to tell. It's not common to catch anything from horses, but I think a lot of that depends on your immune system. Dogs are going to carry the same things as horses, and probably a few others. Millions of people let their dogs lick their faces and never get...

allowing your horse to give kisses

Yes, of course. There is a handful of things you can catch from seemingly healthy horses, as well as some you would notice. I'm familiar with ringworm being contagious, but it seems rain rot is also. Rabies, staph, salmonellosis, lestospirosis, and a handful of things that cause stomach upset...

What color do you think he is?

Well, I sent some of the mare's hair off to be tested for silver. If she doesn't have it, then I'm not sure what color this baby is. There is no dark on his ear tips though, so I'm thinking maybe chestnut. According to the color calculator there is only a 3% chance of that.

What color do you think he is?

Mom is a kind of off looking buckskin. Her legs are dark brown, and her mane is more dark brown than black. I always figured she was a brown based buckskin. But now they say brown doesn't really exist, it's just bay. I had to look up Marbled Tigress, wow, that is a neat color.
