Contest! Share Your Mini Horse Photos!

This one of the minis I used to work with before things went bad with his owner. That’s the owner in the background & my 2 year old daughter cheesing for the camera. Sadly, that was also about the time we realized she was deathly allergic to horses—hence the change to Curlys.

    Curly Miniature yearling!

Here’s another photo of her sire, Gunsmoke. Her owner says our filly is his spitting image.

    Curly Miniature yearling!

So is your stallion Curly or do you just occasionally breed to Curly mares? Our filly’s sire is named Gunsmoke & he carries the curly gene. He was trained to drive but I don’t think he’s been shown.

    Miniature horse run-in shed

This is a Shelter Tech or something 10’x20’x8’ (high) tent. The hay feeder inside holds 2 square bales standing on their ends. The horse in front is my 13-2 HH Curly. The pony peaking his head out is about 12-2 HH.

    Hauling Mini’s with larger horses

I’ve got a 13-2 HH and a 12-2HH and now we’re getting a mini. The mini will probably max at between 41” and 38”, or smaller since she’s a first foal. Anyway, I’m wondering how it is best to haul a mini with larger horses. We’ve got a 2-horse trailer that my husband is willing to alter to suit...

    Miniature horse run-in shed

While it’s not for minis, our horses got a tent this year. We don’t have much snow or anything here, but we do have some wind & have had lots of rain this year. They come in several sizes, this one is 16’x20’ I think. Andy way, it was easy to build and my husband even put it on 2”x6” runners to...

    Curly Miniature yearling!

She is the first Curly min/small pony this breeder has bred. I’d be interested to speak with that other breeder though. I can’t wait until she’s big enough to break to drive! I’m bummed that my gelding at 12-2HH is too big for a hyperbike, but she should be just right! She just got halter...

    Curly Miniature yearling!

We’re getting a Curly miniature yearling filly! We already have a 13-3HH Curly mare, a 12-2HH Curly gelding, & we’re now getting a Curly Miniature filly. She’s from the same Ranch as our other mare (the gelding was bought from there too, but he was a rescue of theirs, not a homebred horse). Her...

    OT: Fused knee

I rolled the dice and got the little Curly mare! My daughter & I are thrilled with her - as you can see in the photo. So far the little mare is showing no signs of problems with her knee (I've only had her a week). In fact, without her knee problem, I think she'd have made a heck of a jumper. At...

    mane trimming suggestions?

<quote>I will NOT 'pull' a mane....the horses HATE it(how would YOU like to have your hair thinned/shortened by yanking out a few hairs at a time??)...and it makes your fingers VERY sore.<\quote> Pulling the mane does not hurt the horse. It may be aggravating since you are pulling on their...

    OT: Fused knee

I'm still anxiously awaiting the hair samples and vet records for this mare. I don't have a video of her in motion, but I do have a few photos of her slaking & trotting showing the range of motion and weight she takes on the bad leg. I'm cautiously hopeful based on these photos and the...

    OT: Fused knee

AmySue - I actually have the same perspective on animals as you do - I grew up on a farm too. That's one reason I tend to question rescues in general. If an animal is in pain and will be for the rest of its life, or will not be able to live with a reasonable expectation of living as intended...

    OT: Fused knee

Fluffy hit the nail on the head about the allergy issue being the reason this horse is so tempting, even with her disability. Curlies aren't that common & the market for them is much more of a sellers market. At this moment I'm not even sure if my daughter will have a negative reaction to them...

    OT: Fused knee

I'm look in into adopting a horse with a partially fused knee that has been cleared for driving and even light riding. I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with a horse with a fused joint. The horse in question was injured as a weanling received veterinary care and is now 5. I'm...

Spin-off of chariots -- two wheels with a pair?

I'm wondering about the mechanics of a chariot behind a pair verses the mechanics of an two wheeled cart behind a pair. For chariots a pair is kind of standard (isn't it? Like in Ben Hur??), but is a big no-no for two wheeled carts. Chariots have two wheels centered over the axle, right? My cart...

    Best pairs book/instructional item

Which is better for learning to go from single driving to team? I've got limited $$ & would like to just buy 1 book for now.

Hoof boots for driving on pavement.

From what I've read on the barefoot/natural trimming websites/articles (and I've read a LOT - trying to resolve hoof issues in the minis I work with), slipping is not a problem for bare feet as much as it is for hooves in shoes. The hoof (if properly trimmed and shaped) naturally provides better...

    Best pairs book/instructional item

Which of these books/guides (or a better suggestion) would you recommend for learning to harness and hitch a pair? I'm using collar and hames-style pairs harness: 1) Putting-To a Pair (Allen Photographic Guides) [Paperback] by Caroline Douglas , Sophie Adkins, Amanda Bulbeck Or 2) Driving...

Upright tin-can hooves despite regular trims

Thanks again. Today the ground is frozen rock hard and the little guy didn't seem sore from it or his trim. I'm hoping we're making progress that I'm too close to notice. It's hard to evaluate when I see his feet all the time (for me). They're still obviously too long, but apparently the little...

Upright tin-can hooves despite regular trims

Thank you. The trimmer came out and was able to make at least 1 foot look more normal. He told me I can rasp perhaps once a week or every other week (depending on the condition of the hooves). If the heels get out of control I can nip them slightly. With the ground nice and soft, the boys were...
