    Flip Flops

sfmini---Thank you, thank you, thank you! You said exactly what I SO STRONGLY feel! And not only 'what you want;, but WHY you want it..... There is NO muscle or fat below a horse's hocks and knees...just bone, ligament, tendon, and skin(and of course, nerves...meaning pain sensors). Please, who...

    Ebola in the US

(Boy, I surely do miss the 'like' button!) TV news reporting that the Deputy tested NEGATIVE for ebola...thank goodness! I agree FULLY about the quarantine being a full 21 days from when the others living in that apartment were removed from it, because it wasn't begun to be decontaminated until...

    Dog topic... controversial

Where I live, the local Animal Control and Animal Humane are FULL of pits and pit crosses. I have encountered some that seemed very friendly and outgoing--but I would never choose to adopt one or allow one to be around my other animals. There are simply too many horror stories, too often. A lady...

Favorite pooper scooper or farm/barn tool???

For many years, I've used the 'Missy' metal tined manure forks. I 'operate' on it when I get it...break the welds on each end that bind the last tine to the 'end' tine, then take a few minutes to use my fingers to push each tine closer together at the outer ends. Works like a charm! I've cleaned...

    Ebola in the US

I just opened my MSN home page to read this 'breaking news' headline: CDC confirms first case of ebola in the US....details to come'. Must say, this is concerning to me.

    Holder Stepping Down

Agree with Sonya! One of, if not the worst,in the office...EVER! Am sure he will be replaced with 'more of the same' by the worst President EVER, sad to say.

I am looking for a solid rubber mouthpiece bit

Barry Hook would disagree. He uses solid rubber mouthed bits, which he states he often has 'especially made' for his use, for many of the horses he drives, small to large, singles to multiples, under 'out in the real world' conditions, in the UK. He is very highly regarded among serious drivers...

Stallion/Gelding questions related to the procedure

The age of the stallion and how much, if any, he has been used for breeding are two big factors in trying to predict how soon he will 'lose' his studdy' behavior...the older he is, the more he's been bred, the more LIKELY he will take longer to 'settle'is a GENERAL rule--but every horse is an...

Your thoughts on an open "club" for showing unregistered miniatures?

OT....LOL! Wingnut, I'm glad to hear I was not the only one who found many of the 'musical'(and I use the term loosely!) background choices abominable! Thank goodness for the volume control on the computer....!

Oh my, what have we gotten ourselves in to? :)

I would certainly recommend an older, fully-settled, gelding, not any young horse. I base my opinions on over 64 years immersed in most all aspects of horse use, care, and keeping.

    Bold horse that's gotten spooky

The only thing I can think of would be to have his vision throughly evaluated and possibly some neurological testing (not sure what or if, that can be done in horses?) Sure sorry your horse is having this sort of issue....:-(

    Eye problem--at wit's end

I am so sorry this ended this way. You did all you could in a very serious situation, and I would have made the same decision under the circumstances. Margo

Who is going to the National Drive this year?

Boy, don't I WISH! It's on my bucket list, but a LONG way from central NM!

    The real cost of ethanol

I can't get it to open for me,either; hope the OP can repost with a link that will work for all of us. I will say, everything I've read about the use of ethanol strongly points toward the mandate to use it as yet another colossally bad idea courtesy of our national government.. .

Brand spankin new to minis! Advice?

My question to you would be 'for what reason do you want to put miniature horses on your acreage'? If it is to utilize the grass, there are other grazing animals that would do as well and be more uncomplicated/simpler to keep. I have a near-lifetime of keeping and caring for horses, and I...

    Feeding The Senior Horse

I have a mare who will be 32 in October. She is in great condition on rabbit pellets, Total Equine(both of which are forage-base, with alfalfa as the primary ingredient, a generous serving of soaked beet pulp PELLETS(the shreds, when soaked, produced too many large, leathery pieces)once daily...

Fat minis and contradictory farrier advice

Although I agree in principle w/ the notion of 'free feeding' hay, in reality I cannot; my geldings would be GROSSLY overweight. I have had to compromise by using slow-feeding bags, feeding 3 times daily, the last one after dark, feeding a combo of grass hays. I fed too generously last winter...

    observations of the horse industry

...and, there are some who say that in general, a hinny is more 'horse-like', while a mule is more 'donkey-like'...GENERALLY!

    It's Been Over SIX Years!!!!

I remember you; welcome back! I am not here nearly as much as I once was, but do read fairly often, and sometimes post. Margo in NM

    Over in the knee

'Over at the knee' is not considered as serious relative to soundness-in-use as 'calf-kneed', AKA 'back at the knee'. There are MANY variables....how much deviation from the vertical, whether or not other 'straightness' issues exist within the limb, whether the limb has good solid bone and...
