Thanks everyone for the info. Marker is still hanging in there. Acting normal with no fever and minimal swelling. I used Naxcel on a previous joint infection a few years ago and it didn't work in that case. But, it would be worth a try again if warranted. I'm keeping on with the antibiotics...

Thanks for your response, Dr Taylor. Poly-arthritis is not treated by antibiotics? How would you know what you are dealing with? Aspiration of the joint fluid and culture? I definitely dislike giving multiple injections daily especially foals. My preference is oral antibiotics as much as...

Agree with Kimberle. I start deworming at a month of age and continue to deworm a foal monthly until it's a year old. Then it goes on the same schedule as my adult horses. I also will deworm with Ivermectin at 6 months of age and will use Strongid after that as well. But, the first few...

Agree with Jessica. A mare needs to be in heat to be cultured. The cervix needs to be open which it is when a mare is in heat.

Always a good idea to have it checked out by your vet. These little guys can go south so quickly, it's better to be safe than sorry. I hope it turns out to be nothing!

I finally was able to access the AMHA studbooks and your colt's dam goes back to Pineys Grass Cutter who is a pintaloosa. So, I'm guessing that's where the appy markings are coming from. Very flashy!

That's great, Peggy! Domperidone has been a life saver here and while I hope you don't need it, it will give you peace of mind to have it on hand.

As soon as the AMHA website is back up, I'll check the dam for you. The McSperitts did have some appy in their herd, so it may well come from there.

Hopping and bucking around his stall this morning. I'll be turning him and his mom out as soon as the chance of rain is over and he gets his meds. Sure hope he pulls through this!
