    potbelly-how to get rid of????

Being from upstate, SC I can tell you the grass here can be rich, I have seen the big bellies from the local hay aka fescue its just too coarse for these little guys. I have a few of mine that don't get grain at all with no problems. I do put a round bale or two out in the winter and I...

Anyone else have a super - pee-er? Soaked stall

I know of a mare that hits the salt block out of boredom and ends up drinking a lot and subsequently pee's a lot, since her feed has salt in it, I took the salt block away. Less Pee, but still drinking plenty so I am not concerned about lack of water intake.

3 month old filly with locked stiffle problem

Also make sure her rear toes are kept short, some will square them as well, sometimes that will help by helping the foot break over faster in each stride. Karen

AMHA Show Ring Driving vs. Carriage Driving...why isn't there more cross-over?

not every one trains their driving horses to be successful outside of an arena. There are some that don't take the time and skip steps making it hard to go back to re do those steps when you decide you want to go outside and play. Yes you need breeching, its a safety and comfort issue for...

    Trail Clinic and Challenge

Great job. Its a wonderful feeling when the horse and you are on the same page and communicating well. I say go for it, but know the limitations of your horse and training level and if you don't feel right about doing something don't do it. Karen

Hickory Knoll CDE, Big boost for minis/vse's and a small brag

Wow that sounds like FUN. I know my mare can do the small pony times, she's really unhappy at the 9kph. She's 35" I love her and driving her is so much fun. It is a lot of fun to kick big pony tail with a mini. Great job, and great Story. Karen

    Anhydrosis

I have a mare that doesn't sweat much and in the heat I give her a beer and beet pulp if she has to work, She seems fine if not asked to do anything when its really hot and humid. Could you feed the one with dry skin issues Vit E and possibly flax seeds? Karen

setting up in the ring questions and training tips needed

Its the overall picture, he's too stretched and in most cases you don't want them stretched, you want them mostly square. You teach the whoa and stand at home. It annoys me to no end when a horse is creeping up on me so I don't allow it at home. This horse's neck ties in a bit low, so you have...

    New horse...need your thoughts

Break it down into 2 steps, whoa and stand, I teach whoa to stop and nothing else. Stand means don't move until I tell you to do so. I start this in the halter then transfer it to driving. I never ask for very long in the beginning, working it up to having a conversation with the neighbor...

    Verbal commands for driving

I use left and right for verbal directions, come means turn sharp, and come left now means a serious sharp left turn. I also teach my horses a verbal half halt, I use the word Hup, gets their attention and they know something is coming when i use that word, be it a transition, or turn or...

What should a mini in healthy condition look like from behind?

It depends on how the horse is built and what you are seeing, but in general no. On a horse with well spring ribs you might see a tiny bit of their side when looking from behind but no large bulges, in my opinion.

foals birthing area and birth results

I like to get hands on with my horses daily, so I bring them in, I also have a coyote problem in my area, so I don't let newborns or at term mares stay out over night due to predators. But I make sure my mares out not stalled 24/7 they need to be out and moving around if not for the foals, then...

Body clipping most white pinto driving horse

I've used a 15 on the show horses, and I I only get the really pink look on the legs, if I am showing on Friday I'll clip Sunday or Monday and the pinky look is gone, and I haven't have one burn either.

Safest way to get up steep hills?

its fine to slow down as you go up the hill but the forward moment of a good strong trot will go along way up the hill. by the time you get to the top you'll probably be walking, but getting that momentum can make a big difference.

Safest way to get up steep hills?

I read the thread but I am sure I missed something but are you walking up this hill or trotting? Can you go at an angle down it, not straight down? If you go down at an angle it will not push the horse so much.
