Developing Straightness *EDIT for Progress Report!*

Lots of great info. try this put the reins in one hand so you have the constant contact, then use your whip accordingly to which side she wants to go to. this way you aren't inadvertently dropping the contact allowing the bulge to which ever direction that she wants to go to. Keep contact...

    Working ponies

I'd roll it up on a piece of plywood attached to a double tree. You may have had "too much friction" with the ground and the chainlink. Make like a skid to move them around on with less ground friction, with screw eyes for rope anchor points to hold your cargo. I find single and double trees...

nitrates in hay What is Normal?

we weren't having the issue of over due mares, they were losing them at 9 months gestation. no deformities, but similar to Becky's situattion. Spoke to the lab, the vets etc they say that the high nitrates in the hay could cause this. When all else was fine before using this hay source, we...

    Conditioning for CDE's

what I do is dependent upon the horse's fitness level from the get go, if they are somewhat fit its different than a pasture potato. I start with 10 minutes walking, 10 minutes trotting, 10 minutes walking this branches into slow trot, fast trot, slow walk, fast walk, etc as the horse...

    Ages (old?) of driving ponies

made me proud to kick booty with an 11yr old stallion in halter last summer The 3yr old thing drives me nuts also. I'd love to see them split the driving classes in to 3-5 yr olds and those 5 and older, but adding another class to an already exhausting show bill seems daunting though. But I...

nitrates in hay What is Normal?

called the lab today and they said that the numbers that we have are too high and are high enough to cause our problems. Thanks Chandab for looking that up. karen

nitrates in hay What is Normal?

Had Hay tested for Nitrates as suggested by a lab since we have had some issues. The results give me the levels in the hay but it doesn't give me the normal levels so I don't know how far off if at all these are. We had 2 batches of hay tested, one from one supplier, and one from a completely...

    Round bales

now I haven't personally tried this but I have personally seen it in use. A Soccer/hockey net over the round bale acts like a slow feeder and keeps it from getting stomped/trampled/scattered and it lasts a bit longer since they don't waste it as soon as I have some extra cash I will be...

Gelding Went Off His Hay & Grain This Morning

Not a vet but have worked for several. Soaked alfalfa pellets might entice him to eat, I would probably dose with Maalox 60cc's, and watch him closely to see if vet intervention would be needed. The change in the weather that we are having right now can cause issues such as this. If he needs...

    Harness saddle

What are you wanting to do with them? I made a set one year buying some loose bells and putting them on a ribbon and just basically tying them around their necks loosely. I wouldn't want to put them around the girth without really securing them in case they slide backwards I could see that...

    Inconsistent Gaits

I would guess back or sacroiliac issues. My mare slipped and fell while in the round pen and threw her's all out of whack and caused an issue similar to the OP's problem. lack of consistency, not wanting to go round and forward, cantering instead of doing a strong trot. I really wish they'd...

    Lucerne Hay

I fed Peanut Hay and Alfalfa when I lived in Florida. I liked the peanut hay it was cheaper and the horses loved it. Not all "coastal" hay is the same, some is very very fine and some is quite a bit coarser the finer the coastal the more likely it is to ball up or cause problems or so I have...

    Dressage Ring Size

most competitions in the southeast use the 40x80 I can't speak of the rest of the country. This has been my experience it is complicated and time consuming to adjust the size for each division. karen

    Imprinting VS Not Imprinting

The mares here usually foal in the stall while mom is passing the placenta they are usually up and down a good bit so I will hold the foal in my lap out of the way and dry it off some with a towel and make sure all is good with baby. I do touch ears and feet but nothing more than just rubbing on...

    Backing

So how do you ask your horse to back? I ask for a slight forward motion but not letting them take a step with my hands then ask them to back I usually get a nice relaxed back. Watching the Nationals classes I felt bad for a couple of kids that their horse didn't back but I also thought ya know...

    Some suggestions please

I just use the cheap Suave human shampoo and conditioner for dry hair. It seems to work for me. The Olive Oil spray in the ethnic hair section does well also and you can use it on the body as well to give a shine in the ring. Karen
