    Stallion Help

I have found it is sometimes helpful to tie the mare and put a halter on the stallion and lead him up to her on the other side of the fence. Let them do some "talking" and when he is ready take him to her side assuming she is willing as well. One of my older stallions does best when the mare...

    North Iowa Miniature horse sale

Yes, I was there will five horses to sell, four were black and white. We had to endure five hours of tack selling before they ever got to the first 20 donkeys! Some people left. Prices were averaging about $200.00 for the most part. Some couldn't get a bid. Some driving horses went for...

    Color question

I will and I will also let you know what the DNA results are. I'll probably get her tested for black/red, Agouti (do we know if she already has that since her ears are tipped in black?), and maybe silver and dun. I think several places in her background the colors were not reported correctly...

    Color question

Here is a picture of the foals dam. I'll need a couple days to get more of the foal's hooves. Also, here is a picture closer up of the foals nose.

    Color question

I bought a mare last summer, registered as a cremello. She was bred to a red roan stallion. Today she had this filly. I thought it was buckskin until I saw the tail, which is not black. Can buckskins be born with a tail that will turn black later? I looked on the AMHA studbook to see what...

    Help Please!

Have your vet give her the shot that prevents the pregnancy - just to be safe.

Wise to take out a loan for a horse?

It also depends on what you are going to do with the horse. If it is for breeding and selling the resulting foals then a higher price for an animal with the right bloodlines might be justified. (Although I have seen people pay $18,000 for a mare and couldn't sell the foals for $500.00) If it is...

What's the earliest you had a mare foal?

Count me as one of the ones who got a surprise this year. I had bred the mare once in June and when she came back in heat in August, I didn't breed her again, but she had a colt this year in May!! So they can easily fool you.

What's the earliest you had a mare foal?

I had one mare that foaled at 299 days and always foaled near 300 days. Most of my other minis seem to foal around 320 days. Usually ones that might have had an infection went long although they started bagging early!

    New filly on Mother's Day

Had this filly on Mother's Day. She wasn't due until the 26th, but luckily all went well. She was the mare's first foal, so am thankful for that!

    Lost my dwarf today

Thanks everyone for you support. I know you have all experienced loss with these little horses. Another mare had a little filly on Mother's Day, so there is a little more happiness on this farm. I'll post pictures on another thread.

    Lost my dwarf today

I took my little 10 day old dwarf to the vet today because she was getting more congested in her lungs. He took x-rays of her heart and lungs and discovered her heart was mis-shapen, leading to fluid build up in her lungs and around her heart. He said she would suffocate from all the fluid and...

    Easter Bunny Hates Me

I guess the Easter bunny is very angry with me for some reason. First of all on Saturday night about 9:00 the mare I was watching started foaling. The foal had its head down, but I managed to get it before the vet arrived. But it is a dwarf and has very lax tendons although it can stand and...

Just wondering if anyone was at the Little King sale and maybe you could share what some of the horses brought. Thanks.

What do you consider a "red bag"?

I would think that if the placenta was not delivered with the foal, it was probably not a red bag. In a red bag delivery, the placenta preceeds the foal because it is already detached from the uterine wall. That's the way I've always understood it anyway.

    TWINS!!!!

They are standing him up and holding him up with a towel to nurse, but personally, I don't think he's going to make it. It is so sad. And such a beautiful mare and so patient. I hope I'm wrong about the foal.
