    Foaling Help-UPDATED 11/8

We fretted..sat for hours..watched all night. The day I almost gave up, and lingered at the coffee pot, I went back to the barn to find a horse with too many legs! Maybe she knows you are watching closely..

ok..I was wondering how you did it, lol! It would take everal people and a tractor tire to bend these... Thank you..we need to make 3..

T post and cattle panel shelters?

How do you bend the cattle panels? Are you talking about the ones that hook together for fencing? We have hung them as gates as well..not pretty, but do the job. Mine are really heavy..lol One of my kids suggested using an old hay ring..

    What DO you feed?

We have used both salt and mineral blocks..have to read carefully, as some of the cattle ones have molasses added to get them to take more. Our horses came from a place where they only had poor quality 'cow hay' and no salt..and a bit of sweet feed they fought over. The mares were within a few...

    filly and colt

..And they will! Or have..are they apart?

    carrots

They are high in sugars, we limit them to treats. Kids find the baby carrots easier to feed than than slices.

    What DO you feed?

Strategy (changing over from Omoline 300), $18.00, depends on who..a little less than amount on bag. All are on pasture during the day(gelding and stud on green 10 acres, mares and foals, donkeys on weaker pasture, 3 acres) Dollar a 3 string square bale for 200 bales, and it's lovely! Next load...

Need help from the experts, Questions????

I use 'butt rope' when I am alone with them..otherwise my granddaughters are happy to give a helpful shove on the rear as I pull gently yet firmly from the front. Pressure should be behind the ears, not yanking on their head/neck, or they will naturally resist. After a few lessons, no problems...

    Another round bale question! :)

I live in the Piedmont of NC..we have snow and ice, but can have warm days (50-60s) between..snow melts after a couple of days. I don't need to heat my water, just break the ice with a stick, though the hose have from house to barn (don't ask, LOL) freezes unless it is in the sun for a long...

    Bad News.

So sorry for you and Elliot. As in all things..learn all you can from your experiences. When you feel better, ask your vet if he can help you understand what happened. It will help you be a wonderful vet one day soon.

    Acorns!

The proteins in the acorns (what the horses are after) lower after 2 or 3 freezes, and they won't affect the horses so much. Feeding hay by choice will help to move things along, and keep the acorns 'buffered' a bit. At least that's what people say around here. We have plenty of acorns, and...

    stall mat question

lol..I know why the mats are on the sidewalk at TSC..can't move them! Heavy, yes..we notched them to cover the stall entries. I think my husband eventually used a sawsall.

    stall mat question

Truck bed liner..there are a couple of thicknesses available, I chose the thickest. Cut to size you want, within bed sizes. I do find really heavy stall mats better in stalls, but for a couple of places where they paw, or that get wet/muddy, the bed liners are a good choice for us.

    The OGRE in my pasture

lol..visions of myself on golfcart hunting a wandering little friend. I've threatened to change a couple of names to Houdini.. Usually happens at 2am, when everyone else is sleeping, or mid-day when I am home alone. Worst is when I am alone with Sam after his nurse has left for the...

    The OGRE in my pasture

We had a beautiful walking path (I liked to walk Sam in his wheelchair there to see the upper pasture..). We came home from a hospital stay to find trucks in the path cutting down full grown trees in a 30 foot swath, because they felt they needed to. We had never reported a problem, unlike...

    Clicker Training

Search clicker training above..I think Mountain Woman (not sure of her 'real' name, lol.) uses clickers. I love them, and use them with dogs and donkeys as well. I am just starting our new foals on the clicker now..hope they take to it! Also google training, as there is a lot of material out...

    Tug of War, Anyone?

Our two mini-donkeys (Bob and LeRoy) tug with anything. Hose, bike tire..old boot they found somewhere. Looks silly, but they are smart and need the stimulation.

    mini zebra

One of the fundraisers at a farm party for a friend with leukemia was to let the kids paint on an older white horse. she loved to be washed!! Then they'd do it all again with washable paints, brushes, and sponge shapes. They all had fun..even the horse.

    Thrush

Thrushbuster blue fingers says you care, lol!..farrier suggested bleach/water mix, but I worry about irritation. Peroxide is fine if hoof is in great shape otherwise, but if there is a possibility of getting into a closed space, it can sometimes cause swelling, I'm told.
