PLEASE try to be prepared when you see your mare is pregnant!

My father in law is alwaya getting calls to help deliver calves, from people who farm only as a hobby and certainly have means to call a vet. He puts himself in harms way, thus seriously threatening his ability to earn a living, to do something for someone who doesn't understand or appreciate...

PLEASE try to be prepared when you see your mare is pregnant!

I hear you. We are on a very tight budget right now and very much appreciate our vet selling us meds over the counter without a farm call. So...I do not appreciate others who have the means, asking me to treat their animal instead of calling the ver themself. I dont want the liability, I never...

    bird feeders

I have a raccoon problem here. With cows and a corn pile on the property. ..coons are everywhere. At night, if you shine a flashlight onto the tree line next to the corn silos, all of the critter's eyes shine and it's creepy. I found that putting the birdseed with hot pepper coating keeps the...

Babies Being Born Here....What else do YOU raise???

Ooh I love hearing about what else everybody raises! So far, we had two litters of kits born to our new Zealand rabbits. We've hatched about 30 rouen ducklings and 40 golden pheasant chicks. Pea chicks will hopefully hatch soon as long as I set the incubator up correctly. A few holstein calves...

    Deworming the shetlands question

Like the sandwich idea, never fed them bread before, these two wont take treats from our hands but we get day old bread for the cows once a week as a treat, so I wilk throw them each a piece and see if they eat it, then maybe dribble the liquid wormer on it. I have treated them with the safe...

    Deworming the shetlands question

Thank you, everybody for the replies. I'm about at my breaking point. I hate it when my horses don't look/feel good because it makes me feel like I'm not doing enough. The weather here has been miserable, rain every day, so its so muddy, these two mares each probably need 30 pounds on them and...

    Deworming the shetlands question

So...I have about had it up to here with the current stress level in the barn right now (you all cannot see how high I am holding my hand right now, but believe me, it's up there, lol). Between complicated calvings, a neighbor calling animal control on us because she's a moron, a sheep who...

    2017 projects

The hides shed for a few weeks after tanning. I vacuum them to help remove the loose hair. Once the hairs that came loose during tanning come off, they should stop shedding.

    2017 projects

Thank you Marsha. The goat is the one pictured above the cow hides. Spent the last two days sanding and breaking down the cow hides, they came out really soft.

Been working on tanning some sheep skins, goat hides and cowhide rugs. Thinking I will sell some at the local farmers market.

    I can still laugh

That is funny. People always ask me why I have silk flowers in my boxes and around my yard...it is because wildlife and loose cows trample and eat them. I'm sure the plants will come back, and maybe the deer will too. Maybe some mothballs or soap will deter him from eating the plants.

    Last foal of the season

McCall's MJ Janey surprised us with this colt this morning, sired by Turbo "Ccummins Tebo Diesel" (his first foal), and of course, he's pretty proud of himself.

    Latest Arrival

Pokey "McCalls KL Pocahontas" foaled last night. A beautiful pinto filly, sired by Redman "McCalls Oh my Gosh". No name yet, only a week past her due date. Relieved all are doing well, so now we can get some sleep.

    Mini Horses still misrepresented.

This is very disappointing, as is much of the information about miniature horses found online. Some informational sights still refer to minis as "dwarf horses", so unfortunately, many, many individuals do believe that all minis are dwarfs and serve no purpose. I think that it would be very...

    update...and it's not good

Reading about your situation just makes my heart sink. You have been through so much already, I wish there was some way to help you. My grandmother suffers from dementia, it is truly a heartbreaking condition for ALL involved. You are not alone, although sometimes it feels like it, everyone...

    Insta-Hot Bath System

Now we have hot water in the barn, but when I was a kid, we only had cold running water and any of the portable hot water contraptions were not an option for us. My father got the clever idea to rig up a garden hose through the laundry room window and hook it up to the hot water valve on our...

Lost my Nelly Bell today. Feeling heartbroken

Thank you, everybody for your kind words. Had to stable Pokey and Janey with the cows tonight...they wouldn't even walk into the barn. It is amazing what they know and can sense.
