A dog sits waiting in the hot summer sun,

Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.

He's been there for days, with nothing to do

But sit by the road, waiting for you.

He can't understand why you left him that day.

He thought you and he were stopping to play.

He's sure you'll come back and that's why he stays.

How long will he suffer, how many more days?

His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry.

He's sick now from hunger and falls with a sigh.

He lays down his head and closes his eyes.

If you could just see how a waiting dog dies.

Oh that's beautiful!!

Mind, he would not have had much of a wait if any of the Forum members had gone by.

I see alot of stray dogs. My brother just inherited one. Says he wasnt gonna keep him, but nobody came looking for him and the dog hasnt gone looking for anybody else so guess he has himself a dog.

There was a chi(sorry can not for the life of me spell that) running around here. He had a coller and tags on but looked very ragged and roungh. I couldnt catch him thou. He almost got hit several times, until the one day he was dead on the road. Apparently somebody didnt care to much about him.

Breaks my heart, that poem.

I live in an area where there are thousands of deer -- and hunting season has begun! Well, at least bows, etc. Guns next.

They use dogs around here.....the lazy hunters stand by the road and wait for them to just be chased by and shoot. Now, these dogs run deer -- period! Many don't know when to stop (or how).....and you can imagine how far they can run, how long, how they get lost, waiting for a truck to pick them up. Most are very kind, gentle dogs around people, timid even. It's a shame for them to be unfound. Most hunters do look for them. Some even have electronic collars to help. Alas, some are not so successful and the dog often suffers.

Every year I usually have a couple who find their way to my yard and are fed, housed and so on.

Yes, I know it is a poem about drop-offs -- ANOTHER sad thing, but the hunting dogs often become the dropped off ones, too. I believe that many who drop off their dogs do so feeling that they have a better chance of someone finding them and caring for them than a shelter will give -- or no shelter around. Often the drop-offs are left in our farming communities, again feeling they will be adopted.

I wish they all could be adopted!

That is a tear jurker of a poem, so sad and happens every day. I made a promise to my self a while back...My next dog will not be a purchased one - unless from the humane society. Lori

I am being slobbered on by my latest "orphan" a 28" Dobe cross who, like most Dobes, left his brain somewhere and forgot where he'd put it!! He has a few aggression problems but he's good with the girls and he's VERY polite with the horses, so we'll see. He's bigger than my foals and Rabbit so I don't think I'll have any problems with hooligans- he needs to find his voice now. It's their eyes that get me. I hollered at the Girls and they just shrugged at me as usual- Ollie tried to get under the Van. Again I came out of the run-in with a leaf scraper in my hands and he cringed right down to the floor- a huge strong dog terrified of an angry Hobbit!! I shall have to not shout and keep all poles parallel to the ground for a few days- he wouldn't even chase a ball, though you could see he wanted to, just hugged my leg and whinged. Why??????

That was a very touching poem. I have a soft spot for strays.

We have always had AKC dogs, but our last 2 have adopted us. Both are labs, Angel who I found in a bad sleet/snow storm almost 1 year ago,as a 6-8 week old, is sitting here on my lap. I read this so -sad poem, and gave my Angel a extra hug... I have a very special soft spot for strays. Corinne

and the sad thing is, thats true.... there arnt just a couple of dogs and children that need homes, there are millions and BILLIONS of animals/children that would just dream of living in the family like us, and the sad thing is, we take it for granite!!~ I bet those kids would LOVE to have a brother to fight with, but yet we say we hate each other, to our OWN family members, and we treat stangers better than we do our own LOVED family!!~ It just makes me SICK to think about it!!~

You know that is just too sad because it is so real..........

for those who care to know all my dogs but 2 have been purebred and of those purebreds only 1 was ever purchased....every single other dog was a rescue........my most recent is the most beautiful aussie dog and he was found running the streets and was almost hit...we adopted him from the animal shelter...........my dogs will probably always be purebreds but I still will adopt before buying.........

I'd like to dump people who dump animals.....these are living beings with feeling's and heartbeats...they are not some thing to be discarded when one grows bored.........grrrrrrrr
