About two months ago I became the new owner of a standard donkey who had been rescued away from the meat buyer by a wonderful lady. ( I know that I could not go to an auction as it would break my heart, but this fine lady saved Lily and I took her from there. ) Lily came from the auction with 12-14 inch feet like elves shoes, thin with a spine and hip bones poking out like a holstein, and wary. BUT, you could see this donkey was wanting to be rescued and she tries her heart out never to take a mis-step that it breaks my heart!

Anyway, it has taken two months to get to where I can touch her all over. Today, the last hurdle was dealing with her tail that was like a club filled with burrs. It was a mess. Now you all have minis or ponies that have really thick manes and tails, and I do too...and my favorite product for getting through them is Equiss' SURVIVOR, a gel that you put on your hands, rub them together, then run it through the hair to be treated.

Well, there was no way I was going to run anything through this club, but I slicked up my hands and ran them over the outside, then just started a little at a time trying to break clumps free. I tell you, I just about died of shock how easy those burrs started coming out. Since I had this stuff over most of my hands, I could continue to add product as I got deeper into the clump. In probably 5 minutes I had picked ALL of the burrs out with my fingers (and later burned them as I don't have them on my property and didn't want them to end up seeding some) and used my brush to straighten out all the hairs and now my Lily has a nice donkey tail like she should.

I know this is a dumb thing to be excited about, but it just seemed like everything came together: Lily letting me deal with her tail, and thinking of this product and how great it turned out.

Thanks for reading!

Thank you everybody. Having Lily in my life is truly a blessing, and she teaches me something new every day. I didn't add, because it didn't have anything to do with this story, that Lily has brought a little package with her. Who knows what it is (she was running with donkeys AND horses) or when he/she is going to arrive, but I am working hard to get her well used to handling prior to the baby coming. It would not be a good idea to try milking a donkey if you needed to, if she wasn't going to be cooperative!

I DO have pictures of this sweet girl, but I don't have them hosted anywhere. This might be the time to find a place a try to post them here! Stay tuned....

OK, here's a try at pictures. Sure hope they work!

This is one of her out in the pasture the other day with my clydesdale, Bailey.

AHH SUCH A SWEET FACE. WE RESCUED A JENNY THAT IS 38" ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. SHE HAD CANCER ON HER EAR SO BAD THAT SHE COULDN'T HOLD HER EAR UP. WE TOOK HER TO THE VET AND HAD IT REMOVED AND LUCKILY IT NEVER CAME BACK, AND SHE WAS CARRYING A PACKAGE TOO. BOTH ARE SWEETIES. SHE WAS SCARED TO DEATH OF BUCKETS. THEN WE ALSO GOT A LITTLE ONE ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO THAT WAS ALL MATTED AND DIRTY AND UNDERWEIGHT BUT SHE IS DOING FINE NOW TOO. THEY ARE SO SWEET TO HAVE AROUND, AND OURS ALWAYS GREET YOU AS SOON AS YOU UNLOCK THE BACK DOOR. HOPING OUR NEIGHBORS LIKE THE NOISE.

Awww such a nice story!! Please let us know when the little package arrives and let us see pics too! She's a beautiful girl, and you're wonderful for adopting her.

Donkeys normally have such wonderful personalities ! I raised minis for several years and loved them. She will be a devoted animal once you two have had a chance to finish the bonding process. Just remember that donkeys are NOT stubborn, the are extremely cautious and proceed slowly. This has given way to the term "stubborn" but this very careful demeanor is what makes them an animal that never forgets once trained

They are great "guard dogs" in that they are so vocal that if anyone comes into the area they bray, like a dog barking :bgrin Oh, and helpers !!??!! You betcha! Hang on to whatever you are carrying else they tend to move things and help you out

: Mend a fence? Well, there goes the hammer in the donkeys mouth -- gonna help ya carry it!

The foals are too cute for words! ALL legs & ears

: I do miss mine.

Thank you all for your kind comments! Lily is the best guard 'dog' on the place, even better than the real dogs. She lets us know every time someone drives up, but she also lets us know if we're not putting the food out fast enough for her liking too! I usually bring the horses in about dark (which is about 6:00ish right now). The other night it started raining about 4:30, but it was light and I didn't think a little rain would hurt them and HEY, I do have some humans to take care of too! Well, the pasture that Lily and Bailey are in is right behind my house. She is SMART and positioned herself right outside my kitchen window (about 30 feet away) and definitely got my attention! None of the other horses figured out where I LIVED!!! She is sooo cool!

Thanks also on your comments on my clydesdale, Bailey. This is kind of a long story, but in a nutshell...I was one of those kids who was infatuated with horses my whole life. I couldn't make it happen financially until I was 38 years old!! So I took some lessons and was ready for my own horse, and HE is the first horse I have ever owned! People thought I was NUTS to have such a huge horse be my first horse, but he is gentle and calm and SLOW!! I didn't want a horse like my friends have that could spook and jump right out from underneath them! Plus, I'm a big girl and I didn't want people to see me riding my horse and say, "oh that poor horse"!

Just an interesting aside...go back and look at the picture of Bailey and notice the color on his legs. Clydesdales who are used in a hitch are expected to have very uniform coloring, which means 4 white legs up to the knees/hocks. He has only two that are correct. So, while he was a hitch horse for 5 years, as soon as a properly colored replacement was found for him, he was rotated out of the hitch. My good news is that he was sold cheap ($3,000) to me because he is considered mis-marked. He would be worth much more otherwise with his great bloodlines, training and experience. Like I could care what his coloring is! I got a bomb proof, well trained horse who had seen everything at the age of 8. He is such a gem. He loves kids and at my old barn the kids would crawl all over him, sometimes 4 at a time, hanging off his neck and butt end, and when they would leave he would follow them to the gate and whinney for them to come back. I am just in love with this guy too!

OOPS!! Sorry! Got wordy again!! Thanks again for all your nice comments.

Jayne
