It was time for year end awards

and so many names were called on the list

all the parent's sat there waiting

to hear their child's name so it wouldn't be missed

And one by one

they approached the stage with a smile

and received a certificate

saying they were the best for a mile

And there we sat

and no one called out our name

our child never moved from his seat

he didn't make it again

Seemed like all the other kids

won something or other

but not our kid

just his little brother

He'd didn't make honor roll

and wasn't good at sports at all

He flunked four subjects again

and hated sports like baseball

He wasn't popular

or considered at all cool

he walked alone

through the halls at school

He didn't get to hang out

with the kids in the town

he wasn't allowed or wanted

they didn't like him around

When all the other parents

bragged and were so proud of their upstanding kid

there was mine in trouble again

with the cops or the principal with whatever he did

All the other kids had new cars

and their parent's in debt

and mine had a old junker

but it was paid for you bet

There was no fancy stereo

or fancy house to invite friends over

it didn't matter anyway

he was different like a 4 leaf clover

And sometimes at night

I'd hear him cry alone in his room

because he was so hurt and confused

he felt he was doomed

But this kid had a gift

like no other I've seen

where he could listen to the animals

and understand what they'd mean

When no one else could figure

why the animals were sad

this boy could read into them

and know what's in their head

He'd say their ear hurt

and this one has a bad leg

and seem to just know

everything that they said

And when one was frightened

and shaking with fear

no one could come around him

except my kid could who could get near

And he knows what is wrong

and tells them help will be there

and he calms them right down

every last little hair

My kid also knows special things

about music and stuff

things that he never studied

just come natural to him enough

You see my kid is Savant

and so special on this earth

I've known he was special

since the day of his birth

So if you know someone

that maybe doesn't excel

maybe he can't read or write

I can assure you he can do something well

Please teach your kids

not to treat others so cruel

they have a right

to have friends in school

It's you the parent

that can teach your child

to befriend the kids that are different

so they don't ever have to hide

Note: This poem is part of the story from my new book that will be coming out this summer. It's not about my kids however some parts have been inspired by them and some of their friends.

:aktion033: That is soooo good! I teach my kids to be like that.

: They are friends with everyone and everyone likes them because of it. Life is hard on my middle daughter sometimes because her older sister outshines her in many ways, but she has finally found something that she outshines everyone else at (swimming-backstroke, and she is GREAT at it and has been asked to join the local swim team as soon as our new pool in town is finished next month :aktion033: ) and she is just thrilled about it. There is now a light in her eyes that there wasn't before. It's so important for kids to find something they are good at, even if it's not the average thing other kids are good at.

Marty you just described my grandson and made me cry...and thank you for reminding me how special he is!Maxine

[SIZE=18pt]Very nice! :aktion033: Although not all of it is right on for me, it touched my heart! As many know, my little guy has disabilities and is thus far undiagnosed.

He is the sweetest kid you could meet and is always there to cheer anyone up with just his smile.

: I feel so blessed to be his mother, even though I have my days where I wish for just one day he could do the things the other kids do. It breaks my heart to see him struggle to do things other kids much younger can do with ease. He doesn't get invited to parties, but would invite the world to his. My daughter is great with him. She is only 6 and my son just turned 9. She has been questioning things (why is he older if she's bigger and can do more?). My parents think we should pull him out of the "regular" school system, so my daughter won't be made fun of for being his sister. It can be a daily struggle without family support.

We make sure both kids are able to try things they want to do. Austin bowls for Special Olympics and made it to Summer Games last year, where he placed gold in his division. Cali started in baton twirling the beginning of November and will be competing in her very first talent show this weekend. She is also taking gymnastics. Over the summers, they have both competed in horse shows and love it, no matter the placing ~ first or honorable.

I just want to say thank you for writing something like that! It really made my day!
