I have one of those deterrents. However, I did have a couple drive out from OK to Nevada to pick up 4 mini rex rabbits. They drove strait through. Picked up the rabbits (were here about 30 mins) and drove back. To get back to the dog. She can and will hurt someone that trespasses. My nieghbor popped his head over our back fence and had she been an inch taller.... He said he would not come over uninvited again. When someone comes to look at the Japanese Chins, we let her (the big dog) go to the door first. I then tell the person I have to put her up and then go back and have the person come in. Animal control knows all about the dog and said if someone comes in uninvited and she hurts them, she is blameless, they trespassed.

Oh my goodness, now you have me worried. I always open my farm to the disabled veterens, they usually come out with an assistant to love the horses and I've never had a problem. Just today I received an e-mail from someone wanting to look at the horses and I'm waiting for them to respond back to me with a date. Think I'll rethink it and e-mail them back to be more specificate on what they are looking for, instead of showing them the whole place. I have english bulldogs, but they would lick some one to death before biting, and my Jack would bite them but he's not allowed out with the horses as he is 14 years old and going blind.

It is so sad that people have to worry about this sort of thing. Here in Ohio we are having problems with people stealing their pet dogs. It's rediculous

I just thought I would add to my last response to this thread. I have a livestock protection dog. As evident by my response "I have one of those.". Have you ever watched the dog s work when they are protecting the horses? Well, I have watched mine and as she percives a threat she will run to the back fence barking. She will also move the horses away from the back fence. Sometimes the horses don't want to be bothered. But she still makes them move to where she feels they are safe. She then goes back and defends her back fence. I am so glad that I bought her. She is worth the bother of dog hair on the sofa and carpet.

Eeek Katiean. That might not be true. There are many cases where tresspassers/burglers have been attacked by a guard dog, sued the owner and won. One well known case a while back, was of an elderly couple in the mid west, who owned a lumber yard. Lumber had been stolen constantly, so they purchased a guard dog. Same thief came back one night and was attacked by the dog. He sued and won a large sum. The owners had to sell their lumber yard just to pay him. I believe there was a book written or a movie made about this particular couple, who ended up losing everything.

You might need to investigate the laws carefully, in your state.

I've been told by several people. "Bet Nobody comes on your property unannounced" and my answer is always "They sure don't" Of course my alarms are miniature dashhounds. Not much take down power. I would handle that if neccesary.

Now in the pasture, miniature donkeys herd the horses to safety and stand guard.

I've worried about this. I have many dogs, several of which are large, that alert me to even a goat not in the proper place, let alone someone on our property (and the leonbergerx's practically break down the window!) But still!

Scary, scary, scary. Our horses live behind our house where we can keep a direct eye on them but there is a back gate they could be snuck out and the thought scares me silly. Thankfully they are not visible from the road, all our neighbors are trusted couples who have been there for 20-30 years, and since we don't breed or sell no one is ever invited on the property but the neighbor's kids for the occasional visit.

Our cattle dog (Blue Heeler) was a holy terror when it came to guarding- no one, but NO ONE, was going to challenge that dog. She'd lunge at the windows snarling and slavering with her hackles on end, barking so hard she shook the glass, and we never doubted that if we were actually threatened she would take someone down without hesitation. To our surprise our sweet little Sheltie female is turning out to be almost as good a watchdog...not a squirrel moves in that driveway without her letting us know. She's gotten very good at the Vicious Dog Impersonation at the front window too; more than one cable guy has asked us with some shock if that little thing was going to come eat him alive!

She likes to wait until they're passing the sliding glass door then leap up barking aggressively and slam her body into the glass in hopes of giving intruders a heart attack. It's pretty effective!
