I only have one foal coming in 2011, but I have a whole list of possible names for this baby already...LOL (oh and names for the foals in 2012 since it will be my colt's 1st foal crop that year...LOL)

Are you guys doing that, too?

Of course! I keep a running list for Doc's babies and keep adding.. I need to sit down and start one for Royal since he could have his first foal this next year!

I've often found though, that even though I have a list I always seem to find one NOT on the list to use lol Like with this year's colts lol

I have made lists in the past, but then never used them.

Funny, but most of my foals tell me what their name is when they are born. Sounds weird I know, but it is true.

I am the worst at names, every foal I had was born nameless, then I bug family members to death asking for suggestions. I finally settle after a few days when I have had a real good look at the fella!

This season coming, Katie's foal is sadly, no named...so far

"Words have meaning and names have power"............so said an unknown author. I've got lists of names which I've accumulated over the years in many different catagories. Plus I like to check the AMHA studbook for different ideas, too.

And then, sometimes I end up not using any of them!

I have a couple of names to build on once I meet the little one. Cannot wait!!!

Yep. I have barn names and registered names. I've got a list of some pretty good ones, I think. Can't wait to tell you which ones I pick (I'm pretty sure about barn names for a colt and a filly). And I can't wait to see/hear yours!

Registered names are easy...but I have to wait til the foal is born to pick out their barn name...may not have anything to do with their reg. name.

We have lists started for just about every year since we change letters every year so we know for sure how old they are... 2011 is the E year, 2012 is the F year.

We have had growing lists for the past 5 years

but somehow the names never fit the foal and

we end up almost letting them earn their own name

or coming up with something not on the list

I guess the list just helps with the long wait

We didn't breed any mares for 2011 so I won't need my list

I've had a list for at least 4 years, but only one foal to date and she was named before she was born (I had a filly and a colt name picked for the cross).

I have names listed for at least 3 of my mares crossed with my stallions, but now have to make a new list, as I've crossed differently this year, so don't have any appropriate names on the list.

And, will have to make up a new name list for the new stallion.

We have ongoing list. Some are for any foal and some are specific for a stallion or mare's foal.

During foaling season we can get lists of names going that are scribbled onto yellow pads or just about any paper we find.

I often have a clipboard outside the foal's stall with the top names we have come up with and anyone can add to the list when they visit the horses.

Frequently it is a dinner discussion during foaling season.

I try to find all my slips of paper and get them added to a master list in the computer so we will have them for future reference.

Almost all of our foals are named using the first letter of their dam's name. So for each mare we have a huge list. I like to incorporate the sire's name into it if possible. Lately we haven't been following any of our rules. Each foal is so unique, every once in a while a name will pop into my head that just fits. My grandpa comes up with the best names, so when my grandma and I are stumped, we turn to him.

I have a few mares bred to my stallion, Phantom, and I'm really hoping for a pesky little colt so I can name him Phantom Menace

I have one mare in particular who always gives me those naughty little colts and she is bred to him so I'm crossing my fingers.

I'm also hoping for a colt from my few spot, Penny Cloud so I can name him Penny Wise (you know, from that really creepy clown movie, It)

Now, those better be the only two colts next year...bring on the filly fairy!

We have a big file stuffed full of names and we add more every year. THEN, I come on here and ask for suggestions since I can't find one in my file that just fits!

I have a list of possible names that I keep on a post it on my computer (the downloadable virtual kind LOL) 3 babies this year actually had names from the list, one my husband named, and the other I came on here for suggestions

. I am always adding more too whenever I get to thinking about it.

LOL Charlotte! I find myself thinking of Star names for your foals! Oh, like I don't have enough trouble thinking up "Lotto" names!

Yep, I'm guilty!

It's something I like to do at work to help pass the time, sometimes the lists make it home to go on the computer master list, sometimes they don't! Some years I use a name from the list, some years I don't! It's funny, but for each foal I have to make a list of names and then pick a registered & barn name... it is tricky to find a registered name that fits with a barn name I like, or fits the foal! I try to do a color themed name, and fit sire/dam if it works...

Have a tough one this year, how do you incorporate or go with a color themed name to go with Carnival? I have a few ideas, but it's a lot harder!
