I just bought two boxes on a whim for Christmas as it was a great deal, like $29.99 each after rebate when they're normally $199.99. Does anyone else have it? What has your experience been? Any fees or hidden costs I should be aware of?

Thanks!

No Marty, it's that magic box that will let me go feed the ponies, sneak out for that late ride, meet the vet, whatever I need to do without missing the approximately two programs a month I bother to watch. LOL My life already revolves around work and the horses, it'll be nice to watch the programs I want to watch when I have time to watch them and not when they're on!

Hi,

Have you subscribed to the service, yet? We just got a TiVo, too, at Circuit City a few weeks ago. Ours is the one that burns DVDs from TV programs, but it's similar in that you have to pay a monthly fee to subscribe. Can't remember what the montly fee is, it's not much, but we chose the one time payment of $299.00 that is good for the life of the TiVo box, rather than pay the monthly charge.

We got ours all hooked up and then what does it do? Starts changing the channels all by itself and recommends programs all over the place, records this, records that, the channel-surfing wonder, and it won't even let us watch DVDs!!!

Finally we got sick of troubleshooting the darn thing and have called the manufacturer. They are saying it's defective and we should have a new one, soon. It has not been much use to us, yet, and we've had it for a month, now.

So all I know is that you do have to pay the access fee unless by some chance they bundled that in w/your purchases. I think it's a great idea and I hope to not have to watch any ads anymore!!! I just HATE ads! WHO thinks this crap up, anyway?

*LOL*

Good luck w/the TiVo. Their website has pretty good support and instructions for whatever you might need. www.tivo.com

I've had TIVO for both our TV's since before most people even knew about it -- at least 4 years but maybe longer. The ones I bought for us were only $99 and have the DirectTV receiver built in. I think they do still sell the brand (Hughes) and similar model to what we have for about the same price. We've never had a problem with ours at all and from the first time we turned them on, we have loved having TIVO. Now, I nearly never watch live TV. Even if it's a show I'm dying to watch, I wait until it's already going for awhile so I can fast forward the commercials. I think we pay something like $5/month for the subscription. I just won't ever want to be without the TIVO's, and Harvey's the same way. You'll love it!

we have dvr(same thing as tivo) thru dish satellite and got two for free for signing a one year contract.

we really do like it and use it A LOT! now i can tape all the horse shows i like and not have to be there. much easier then a vcr or dvd player.

my sis came from out of town and she couldnt believe you can rewind and fast forward live tv! pretty cool

I love my TiVo and like Jill I have had it since the very begining. I couldn't imagine being without it. My problem used to be that I would be watching a show and during the commercial I would run to the barn to check on the horses and then get involved and forget that I was watching something

or sometimes I would just go into another room and before I knew it I would be doing something totally different. Then later on I would be wondering whatever happened on the show

I don't have that many regular shows that I watch but the ones that I do I have set to record and then I never miss them. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it picks shows that it thinks you will like to record but that isn't really that bad.

I have TiVo and just love it! You get spoiled. We only have it on the bedroom TV and I wish we had it on the living room TV. You get so used to zapping through comercials! We pay about $5 a month for the service through Direct TV. Good luck!

If it keeps taping specific shows it thinks you like, and you don't like, what you can do is pick play from the menu and start to play the show, then give it 3 thumbs down and it won't tape it on its own again

Thanks guys! I appreciate the opinions and the little "tips and tricks" that you gave.

I've got a DVD burner on my computer so I chose to skip that feature. If I want it, I'll just transfer it to the computer via the broadband connection and burn it from there. It should work, I hope. If it's the wrong file type my electronics/computer genius ex has a program that should convert it for me.

I haven't gotten the boxes yet so no, I haven't activated the service. It should be $12.95 a month for the first box and $6.95 for the second box. I thought about the lifetime thing but it mentioned that it was the life of the box and not the life of the person and unless the box was officially defective the "lifetime" could be cut short any time. Good reason for them not to make a long-lasting product, right?

I looked at the diagrams on the website very carefully before buying. You're right, they do have very clear schematics and help online and that's one of the things I liked about them. I found diagrams for how to hook up your VCR with the TiVo so you could record one channel and watch another, and I think I can adapt it successfully to a DVD player. I THINK! LOL. That is why I will be tinkering with the set I bought for myself in my bedroom before I give my parents theirs on Christmas morning. I usually have a big 'ole pile of clean shirts floating around on top of the TV anyway, I'm going to take advantage of that to hide the TiVo.

I'll let you know how it comes out. I'm no electronics wiz but I got a crash course when I moved to college and suddenly had to hook up cable, etc. Last year it was ME, not Dad, that hooked up Grandma's new DVD player and my aunt's new combo player. Dad couldn't figure out all those newfangled cables!

Poor engineer. First time in his life he'd had to ask me for help.

On the other hand he was proud that his daughter had finally started to show talent in his line of work! Hehehe.
