I already have a giant dog, a cat and 5 minis. I don't know why I went out and adopted an American Eskimo...I think I made the mistake of holding her in my arms. But now that I am home with her, she runs around and my big dog tries to play with her and it's CHAOS!

I'll give it a week to see if this works. She's a sweet puppy, but my husband wants her to obey the same rules that the big dog does (and reasons he has those rules in my book is because the big dog can hurt people if he jumps up or play bites)...also, the little dog is so full of energy, I'm having difficulty getting her to stay focused. Maybe I should have given this decision a little more thought after all.

Anyone know much about this breed? Anyone want to rescue me from my bad decision and readopt her! LOL

How old is she? If its a puppy, you should expect them to have a bit more energy than your adult dog. also, the dog is new to your home, you cant expect it to know your rules right away. My dog didnt fully settle in until we had her for about a month. Shes a high energy breed, and if not walked daily or taken to a fenced area to run, she gets rambunctious. Our old home had a fenced in yard, while our new apartment has a tiny yard with no fencing. We're still trying to figure out a good routine to get her the most exercise. You can defiantly tell if she hasnt been to "grammys" in a few days to get to run in the yard, as she does it in the house... To help her settle in better I started basic obedience classes with her asap after I adopted her. I think if you give the new dog a strict routine and time to settle in you will see that she acts much better.

Give it a little time, we just adopted another dog back in January and she has settled in just perfect. Did not start out to well to begin with. Mass chaos reigned for a little while and the people that had her before had her on some crappy food, when we started feeding her our food, she got the runs for several days.

But we have all the kinks worked out and all is good now!

I had a friend many years ago who had one of these- it was a VERY active dog! She did settle down some with age. But it was always playful and happy. They are not just a lethargic door mat. Hey, at least your big dog likes it, has someone to play with, etc..... Some new dogs just dont get along in a new family so consider yourself lucky that this one fits in, despite the chaos.. things will tone down- give it a chance.

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. She is a cutie..

And I think she'll make a great jogging partner on my short runs to the mail box (1/4 mile away).

Hope things work out!

I LOVE Eskies!! They are active, smart and the best dogs. Feel free to send her to Texas, I will take her in a heartbeat.

That said, there is always an adjustment period, for the other animals and us, when a new one comes home. Set the rules, decide the boundries and have a blast. They are great dogs and I am sure you will enjoy her. What size is she? Eskies come in three sizes.

My husband brought home another heeler about a month ago, she is still settling some. The big issue we have... I already have a spayed female heelerX (2.5 years), he has an intact male heeler (10-11 years) and the new one is spayed female (1.5 years); the two girls are prooving why female dogs are called b!tches, they are getting better, but some days... The only really good thing, the two girls are young and run together and burn off that young energy; and the grumpy old dog gets a break.

I had a puppy that we were told was a Rott/Lab mix. She looked more like a Bernese Mt. Dog. Anyway, my youngest brother would get so mad at her because she looked like a full grown dog but acted like a puppy. It got to the point he was hitting her. Most times I had to get between the dog and my brother to save the dog. I finally placed her. However, I was able to watch her grow up and be a very good dog.

Give it time a new puppy almost always causes chaos. We have a almost 6 month old puppy here my house is well... a mad house..we have other dogs and cats and she is good- has her housebreaking moments but she sure brings a different energy into the house.

I feel like I live in a cartoon, dogs chasing cats down the hall, coming back with cat chasing dogs, running wildly into walls, wrestling on the floor all the while the parrot screaming at them.. it is insanity but I have to keep telling myself just a few more months and her energy level will drop a bit and life will return to somewhat normal. For now I guess I need to look at it that she is keeping the couch potatos active

After a couple days, things seem a little better. The cat isn't hiding so much and I think the pup is starting to learn my rules. At least she understands "no" and she's learning "sit" - two very important rules here! haha

And well, the big dog, Frank, still wants to play all the time.

I think once you all get used to the new addition, things will be fine!! She sounds like a good little dog. My friends Eskie was a small one... I didnt realize they came in three sizes! She sure was a cute little dog!! And VERY fluffy!!
