I am really confused, I received a letter telling me my colt cant be registered until the sire who is three gets dna'd. I thought that this only applied when the horse was five. We have registered other foals out of young stallions without having them dna'd. I know they have to be dna'd before you can get Permanent papers on their foals but I have never had this trouble with getting temporary papers on my foals. Is this in the rulebook, I cant find anywhere in the book or online that says this. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

edited to add: It isnt too big of a deal to have the stallion dna'd and they were planning on doing it next year since the rule is being changed to 3yrs on Jan. 1 but I wanted my paperwork soon and now I will have to wait for the stallion owner to send for the dna kit and then send the dna to the lab and wait for the results. Just hoping that they made a mistake and I can find information to use to get them to process my paperwork :)

Any horse, mare or stallion, who was born in 1996 or later must be DNA'd before any of it's offspring can be registered in AMHA.

Rule 184A Paragraph 2 in the current Rule Book.

2. All foals born after December 31, 1995, must be DNA

tested or blood typed prior to registration of their offspring

YUP, unfortunately I received the same letter and my stallion is just 4. I thought I was safe for another year too

I am sooo glad someone asked this as I was about to also...I was contacted by a friend who has a colt out of my 4 year old stallion...she tried to reg him and same thing..sent back...said I needed to DNA my stallion...well..learn something new every day. So what is the difference of a horse being Parentage Qualified vs just DNA'd on the papers...aren't they the same thing?

confused, yet again

This rule has been in place for many years. It's not new.

No, they're not the same thing. Any horse can be DNA tested, but not all can be Parent Qualified. A DNA test will tell the genetic markers for that horse. To PQ, that horses' DNA is checked against it's sire and dam to see if the horse in question qualifies as an offspring of the two parents. Both parents have to be DNA tested in order to do this. Not all are.

You have to request PQ when you DNA test a horse if you want it to be done. AMHA is supposed to be automatically PQ'ing any 2009 and forward foals if they are DNA'd at time of registration and if the sire/dam are already DNA'd. There is no extra charge to PQ.

I PQ the majority of my foals so buyers know the parentage on papers is accurate.
