When Music man had it I clipped the area and washed it with iodine then rinse it real well....His hair is so thick the vet told me to give him a blanket clip (clip his belly , neck , head ) so the "heat" could escape....He was rubbing his tail too so I clipped a "Horseshoe" area round his tail...it seemed to help and he's not rubbing any more but still has the dandruff.....cant wait til warm weather to give him a bath and clipp the rest off...Glad my pictures helped you out.....baby oil rubed in works great too...M&M loves his baby oil rubs..LOL

As long as it is a wormer safe for pregnant mares, like Ivermectin, it would be ok to worm her, some do it a month before foaling, but since you are not sure, you can wait till she foals and worm right after........

Did you worm her when you got her?? I have wormed mine weeks before foaling with no problems.

All of our pregnant mares are wormed with an Ivermectin dewormer one month prior to foaling and w/n 12 hours of foaling. Also, we give them their annual vaccines (no West Nile) one month prior. This is to benefit the mare AND the foal.

Looks like a bad case of dandruff to me - horse lice are tiny little things that look almost like bits of shavings and they tend to cling to the roots of the mane. They also move - dandruff doesn't crawl.

I worked at a farm where a horse came in with it and we controlled it with... SHOW SHEEN. Apparently lice don't like Show Sheen. He had the lice and itchies on his neck, under his mane and on his chest.

When we brought Finisterre home she was infected with lice but her rescue agency had doused her with a de-lousing chemical (it was oily and stinky - a chemical made for farm animals but I don't recall what it was). I continued with Show Sheen when she got here and put it on the minis (the lice may have looked at my minis and were thinking "banquet" but they were finished before they even got started).

Good luck!

I just got off the phone with the vet's secretary and she told me that it would be ok to worm Foxy tonight ,..She said it would not hurt the foal,.....

I asked her about the rain rot,.....and she said that she had never heard of it before.

I have never seen "white" rain rot...that is a nasty skin condition (I think they called it folliculitis) where the horse gets scabs that are painful across their backs and rumps similar to the pattern rain made if it dripped down the horse and it was treated at one of the big horse farms I worked at with antibiotics and something called Lym-Dip (available through the veterinarian).

We wormed mares prior to foaling with ivermectin at one farm - it was suggested that it would ward off a threadworm infection of the milk... but now I cannot remember how close to foaling we were doing that. (I am not a veterinarian - just going on what ours have told us over the years.)

If it looks like the picture that someone else posted, that just looks like dandruff to me. This time of year it seems everyone is itchy - loosing winter hair. Clipping would help, but you live in Antartica practically, so this is probably not a good idea for you yet Terri. Good Luck with the foaling, I can't wait to see what Foxy has....(I know you can't wait either :bgrin )

IT LOOKS IDENTICAL TO WHAT MY FILLY HAD, I GOT HER IN DECEMBER AND HER COAT WAS VERY LUMPY AND SHE HAD TERRIBLE FLAKY SKIN, I WAS ADVISED BY A FORUM MEMBER TO USE HALF IN HALF OF LISTERINE AND WATER AND SPRAY ALL OVER THE AREA,AS ITS AN ANTIBACTERIAL IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE I CLIPPED HER TWO WEEKS AGO AND ITS GONE, IM TELLING YOU TERRI IT WAS SOOOO BAD, KEEP SPRAYING HER COAT UNDERNEATH WITH LISTERINE IT REALLY WORKS AND THEY SMELL LOVELY, AND ITS CHEAP!!!
