It was recommended to me that we use a 3-way rotational schedule for our worming program. This worked perfectly for our yearling as she was given Ivermectin paste a month before we bought her and brought her home. So she was ready to move right into the recommended schedule and we gave her StronglyCare (Pyrantel Pamoate-based wormer) in May. The next med on the the list for July is Safe-Guard (fenbendazole).

Our mare was wormed just before she was delivered to us in early May. She was given Ivermectin at that time.

Yesterday, I gave them both the Safe-Guard (fenbendazole).

For September, the Ivermectin is scheduled next in the rotation.

Should I be concerned that the mare is she's getting the Ivermectin "close together" in this rotation? I'm concerned that we've missed a "type" of wormer in the mare because she was given the Ivermectin in May when my rotation schedule recomended the StronglyCare (pyrantel pamoate).

Or should I just relax? She'll be on "schedule" going forward and all will be fine?

I would just go ahead and deworm her with the same as the rest of your herd will be getting so she gets into the rotation. A few rounds of Ivermectin certainly won't harm her, and at least she is being wormed with something.

There is no need really to rotate, and doing so can, if you do not get the timing right, actually be harmful.

I use Ivermectin as a base and just add the 5 day Fenbendazole when I need it (twice a year in my case) and the Praziquantel for Tapeworms also twice a year, but both these are given as well as, not instead of, the Ivermectin.

Isn't that a rotating schedule, then?

I do similar to Jane / Rabbit... However, anytime I get a new horse, no matter where he or she came from, I always deworm immediately with Ivermectin. Then they go on the same schedule as my other horses.

Matt, not really as I do not ever use anything instead of Ivermectin, as I said, only as well as.

So I do not use Ivermectin then Strongid, then whatever, I use Ivermectin + Praziquantel (nothing else gets Tapeworms) and Ivermectin + Fenbendazole (nothing else gets encysteds) do you see??

Yes, Jill, I agree, obviously you need to worm all newcomers, not just accept the person who sold them to you's word that they are wormed, I am afraid I worm any visiting mares irrespective of what I am told...
