So I've totally put all of my focus on my Dachshunds now that my horses are gone and I'm wondering how many of you on this forum have Dachshund kennels... or even just a few Dachshunds that you may raise a litter off of here and there.

Do you have websites for your kennel? I'd really really love to see them if you do...could you please post the links here so I can go browse your sites and admire your dogs?

I found a new web album program awhile back and tinkered around with it on my chaosranch.com website...just sort of put misc. photos up there,... but I'm thinking I might go ahead and just switch it over to a kennel site and re-do the whole thing...what do you think? Should I take the dive into the wonderful world of online Dachshund websites... or just sit back and just stick with the locals?

Right now for females I have...

3 long haired reds,

1 short haired dilute red,

1 black and tan dapple short hair,

1 short haired black and tan,

2 long haired black and tans.

For my male, all I have is a very stocky short haired red male (many of you are familiar with Joey)... I am looking for another male, but not sure what color to get. I am thinking possibly a long or short hiared black and tan dapple male with blue eyes....or blue in his eyes.

But then again, a chocolate dapple would be pretty.

Maybe I need 2 new males!

Nicole...Tater is adorable!!!

My mother-in-law has a little male poodle that I started to wonder about crossing with one of my long haired Doxies... just for one litter.... but "designer puppies" don't sell well around here and I don't want to produce puppies that might be hard to place in homes... you're is totally adorable though...what 's the temperment like ? Poodles can be hyper and stand-offish... is a Doxipoo that way?

I have a dachshund kennel, Right now I have a red smooth girl, her black and tan daughter, a chocolate and tan smooth, all three are pie carriers . I also have two long black and tans and a long red and white pie. At the moment I am stud free.... had to place my two boys Foxy and Blue in pet homes because they were not show quality. Foxy had developed a fiddle front, out in the elbows and easty westy in the feet. Blue had a dip in his topline. All of my dogs have at least 20 champions in the first three generations, except Babs, she is the pie with no champions but my husband loves her. We have a litter of longs right now 2 chocolate girls, two black and tan girls and a chocolate and tan boy, He may acturayy be a shaded red Im still undecided. Hunter the red snooth will be bred this week to a black and tan champion. Pics of all but Babs and Lexi the choolate are on my web site www.rivercitydachshunds.com

The choc and tan belongs to my sister's 8 yr old son...........they are inseperable.

I also have a red one that is not pictured.

I love the miniature Dachshunds! They are so cute!

I really like Lucky C's black/tan silver dappled male with the partial blue eye, but shipping him to Oklahoma concerned me so I decided to look closer to home.

We found Ray! A 10 month old male black/tan short hair with some white on his chest and feet. He is the funniest dog and such a character. I don't even have any pictures of him yet as there has been so much going on here the past week, but I'm sure I'll get some soon to post.

I wasn't a big fan of the long hair dachshunds before we had this litter of pups and ended up with the two long hair girls, and now I'm hooked!

Both of these guys are super ADORABLE, but I LOVE that chocolate/tan!!! My next one (won't be until I get a place of my own lol) will be a chocolate/tan or a solid black

I haven't met very many truly stand-offish Poodles. The few I have met who have "issues" were either poorly bred, or raised by people who created the issues in their dogs. I have rescued one of those, but my other Toy Poodle who I raised and who is Tater's sire, is an incredibly sweet, well-balanced dog with an adventurous spirit. I grew up with many other Poodles in my family and have owned several others over the years. I've raised purebred and mixed Poodle pups and have to say, this litter of Doxiepoos was my favorite. The dam is an almost overly sweet, beautiful longhair silver double dapple owned by another forum member. There were three pups and they're all sweet, smart and outgoing.

So after a bit of tongue biting, I have to jump in.

I hope anyone considering breeding Dachshunds is very aware of the genetic issues they are prone to. I would hope the appropriate genetic screenings are being done prior to the dogs being bred. We can't test for dwarfs in our Minis, but in dogs we can test for bad elbows, hips, hearts, eyes, etc.

I'd hope that those with dapples are aware of the dangers of producing double dapples. http://www.dachshund.org/article_double_dapple.html

I'd hope that people realize 'designer mutts' are just that-MUTTS. There are plenty of them in shelters and rescues already. Come to think of it, there's no shortage of Doxies, either.

And I'd hope, like with every other animal, people are breeding to a standard and for a purpose, and aren't breeding 'just to breed'.

I'm sorry, but this is a sore spot with me.

Now that was just plain mean to insult someone's animal companion just because they aren't a purebred.

Pedigrees and breed standards do not make a dog better than any other dog. I'm willing to bet that her Doxipoo means as much to her as my Dachshund does to me. Also, people that breed Doxipoos, or Labradoodles, or shihpoos, or whatever probably DO have a standard and a goal when they breed them. It may not be the goal or standard that you would have. But that makes it no less a goal to achieve.

I don't see anywhere where I said or even implied that mutts or un-pedigreed dogs are worthless. I have a Dachshund mix and I think the world of him. He's adorable and sweet and perfect in my eyes. But would I ever dare to breed him? No!

Dogs are not horses are not rabbits are not fish are not rats. What is acceptable or commonly done in one kind of animal may not apply to the next. And besides that, I'm not talking about choosing one breed over another. The cautions in my post apply to ANY breed of dog, not just Doxies. And besides that, are we euthanizing thousands of horses in our nation's shelters at the moment?

I used to work a job where daily, I saw 'victims' of poor breeding and overpopulation. Dogs missing eyes, dogs who couldn't breathe, dogs who were so poorly put together or riddled with joint issues that they were all but crippled by the age of two. Dogs who's bodies couldn't stand surgery and never woke up, and litters of fetal dogs and cats put to sleep because there was no room in the world for them.

I am a fan of Doxies and I am a fan of responsible breeding in dogs-breeding animals of known lines, provably sound conformation, temperament, and ability, with proper genetic testing done to prove the health of the line.

It's entirely possible everyone in this thread IS doing all those things, but I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere. It's something I wanted to bring up.

Honestly, it's threads with posts like this that make people afraid to come on here and ask questions, it's hard to let your lack of something show when there are people out there just waiting to pounce on you and make you feel stupid or like you are less than they are simply because you were unaware, or you are not living up to "their" personal standards.

Yes I am aware of dapple X dapple crosses, I love the dapples so that is one thing I definitely looked into, which is why my female is a black/tan solid and my male is the dapple, (the bitch's sire was a dapple and her mom a black/tan solid; my male's sire was long hair dapple and mother is red)

Are my doxies 'show quality'? probably not, doesn't matter to me, all the pups have gone to great homes with the exception of the dapple boy who hasn't found the right home yet, he'll stay with us until we do find him that home... Will we have another litter? Probably eventually...

ugh.. :DOH! Now that I'm in a bad mood I guess I'll go entertain myself with working on collages and logos..

I'm sorry, I just can't agree with people creating MORE dogs simply to be pets when we already have such an abundance. Maybe in in the minority opinion on that, which might be why we have such an overpopulation crisis here.

Such enthusiasm, but don't you think it's better directed at irresponsible owners who treat pets like disposable commodities? Any planning, genetic testing and purebred or mixed breed heritage behind a dumped pet really doesn't matter. Breeders only breed because they "know" their pups will have somewhere to go and our throwaway society seems to have no problem cirulating pets through their homes as if they were toilet paper.

PS. No worries, I am totally at peace with Tater being "just a mutt."

I think it's fantastic when someone wants to help someone else along. Passing down knowledge from a "been there done that" situation is one of the greatest things a person can do for someone else who's still a bit green. But all things can be said in a positive, negative, or judgemental way. I like to keep in mind that you can catch more flies with honey rather than with vinigar when it comes to giving advise to someone. Be kind, and nurturing... it is very difficult not to let the things you've seen interfere with the advise you give to someone... but it would stick much better if said in a kind way. However it was said, thank you for posting the link for those that are unaware and can gather advice from that link.

The term "mutt" is a common insult to a dog. That's where I picked up on thinking you were downing their dog because you said " I'do hope that people realize 'designer mutts' are just that-MUTTS". Was that honestly meant to be a compliment? If so, then I apologise for thinking you were downing her pet because it was not purebred.

Perhaps I'm a bit over-sensative to this because I am one of those people that cannot afford big fancy heated/cooled kennels.... or cannot afford to travel round the nation showing off my dogs to everyone, or cannot afford to pay $600. for a dog when it is honestly identical to my dog who I bought for $200. My dogs have soft shavings in each of their igloo houses, that are raised off the ground, they have very large pens (16'X32') they are dewormed, vaccinated, petted daily, and I call them each by their own names. They have good food, clean fresh water, and I am always going out to sit in the pen with them. That's what I can afford to do for them, and they are happy and healthy. They all have papers (except two) and you can't look at them and tell me which two dogs it is that do not have papers.

Perhaps I am making an issue out of something simply because those that do all the testing, and that show their dogs and ask outrageous prices for their dogs, are normally the ones looking down their noses at those of us who just have dogs as companions, bred for companionship... and as companions, my dogs are champions to me and their owners.

I do have a dapple, and I am looking for a dapple. NOT to breed together, but to breed my fem. dapp to my male solid, and my male dapp to female solids. I am carefful in breeding... I do not want an unhealthy puppy anymore than anyone else. I want healthy, happy puppies, and I do everything I can do to improve my chances on achieving just that.

Though I enjoy different points of view... we got a little off topic here. I was just wanting to know where I could locate other Dachshund breeders/owners so that I could browse their sites and learn from their matings. I trust the members of this forum to be responsible breeders and caring owners with their dogs, just as they are with their horses...so this is where I turned to for information on the Dachshunds. A trusted source. I certainly didn't want to start an arguement or didn't want to have to defend myself for wanting to view other Dachshunds as possible mates for mine.

Perhaps next time I have a question, I should just stick with Google.... never had to explain or defend my intentions with Google.
