The horses are shedding like crazy, they're itchy (no, no lice, etc, already checked), coating the fences, gates, buckets, whatever they can find with 3-4" hairs lol and I'm dieing to clip some up even if it is just head/neck.. I did do a little clipping on TJ, our 2008 appy colt, to get a sneak peek at what he was coloring out underneath since I'll be putting him back on the market..

Would LOVE LOVE LOVE to head/neck our new boy Doc, supposed to get up into the low-mid 50's for the next week/week and a half, really tempted to but a little leary in case it takes another cold snap for a few days, though he is in the barn except for turnout

ARE YOU KIDDING??? I am back to blankets and frozen solid water buckets!!! Two of the coldest nights of the winter Monday and Tuesday night, plus 6 inches or so of snow. At least the snow temporarily covered the ice.

:shocked NO WAY...NOT YET!!!!! Though I am DIEING to know what is under all that hair

I am just going to do some touchups today like the beards throatlatch and things like that but I am going to clip around March 15 bcuz I am going to a show april 4 and 5 and like to have a rough clip ahead of time so I can bathe and get them dry faster for the final clip...it has been warm but windy here the last couple of days and it is supposed to get up to 45 deg. today and over 50 tomorrow but I am only clipping the ones that have stalls so I could heat the barn if it did get rediculously cold.

Well I've got plenty of blankets and hoods and stalls and a friend that's a former electrician that insists they can fix the old heaters in my first barn, but for now I'm holding out until late next month. We're also expecting weather in the 50's this week, but it's going to be wet, and it's going to be back to the 30's next week--clipping with those kinds of dramatic changes in the weather seems to be asking for sick horses. I know tomorrow when it's bright and warm I'll be thinking about it again though.

I know what you mean with wanting to clip but I won't clip mine until at least the end of this month/beginning of April when I know it will be a bit warmer and more likely to stay that way. And I will only do head and necks. The rest will wait until it is for sure going to warm up and stay that way.

We've been having a warm streak this week with daytime temps in the 50's and nighttime finally staying up in the 40's so the "coat blowout" (as someone at the vet clinic so picturesquely called it yesterday) has begun in earnest. I've been starting to get the urge to clip as Kody is hitting the treadmill seriously now and takes a long time to cool down with all that fur but resisted until yesterday. I couldn't take it any more!!

I'm holding out on a full trace clip for another week or two as I don't trust the temps not to plummet again and hate to start the blanketing cycle so soon but I did the first official spring clip yesterday by removing his beard and neatening all the edges from nose to tail. He looks so much better!

I won't wait more than another two weeks to clip his underline and whole neck though because he's got fungus galore under there this year and it's going to need time to clear up and regrow before the first show in April. He's already got bald patches there anyway, it can't look much worse.

At least his halter fits now.

Hurrah for clipping season!!

I so wish I could, but I can't even get them out of the paddocks right now. Well, not without moving 2-4' of snow, I've been climbing over the fence, as it's easier than digging out the gates. We happen to be above freezing this week, but its early March, and spring doesn't arrive here til late-April, if we're lucky. We're supposed to get more snow on Friday, like we don't already have more than enough snow. The two that have been wearing blankets, have been going naked during the day, its so warm right now, but I know that'll change. I'm so ready for spring, and have been for a month.

My stallion should be looking through his fence, not over it... [Hopefully, the picture attached.]

I only have one filly almost clipped.

I cant wait to get the rest off of her and then share pictures.

Unfortunately trying to wean her and she keeps dropping worrying. Silly Filly.

I wish! I'll be holding out for at least another month. I clipped late March early April last year and regretted it, we were still having cold snaps! We had a huge snow storm the second or third week of March last year as well, so I don't think winter is over just yet, though I've got my fingers crossed! We still only had a high of 20 yeasterday, though it's in the 40's today.

As I was reading this thread and happily thinking of the clippings to come I happened to raise my head and look out my wondow at....a blizzard! now where did that come from? It is above freezing days here and i have a filly that I'm considering doing the poodle clip on (leaving legs and head alone) since she's rubbed out large portions of her winter coat as it is (I want to try bathing her with an antifungal shampoo and clipped seems like it would help it be more effective) but this is only March and I know deep down it is too soon to clip here with out a heated barn. So I guess I'll have to wait.

Chanda I know just what you mean. I dug out a path to one of my Auto waterers on Monday and the snow banks are now taller than ME

The snow kept breaking up under the horse's feet and I dug it out so they would continue to use it. Then i had to lead them thro the tunnel to convince them it was safe. I am SOOOOO tired of winter and snow this year.

I just clipped a bit on some necks to get photos of sale horses and some pics of some horses i was needing new photos of badly....like i said, nothing extreme but sweats had to go on ....

I have just clipped the throats and where the sweat sits, then over the flank just a bit on one side so i can see them smooth out..just makes it easier to condition them early on without having to clip them full out (which i would not even think about doing right now..) but its so hard to see and feel threw 2"

I'm going to start after this weekend, most likely. It got cold and rainy this week, but next week shows dry, sunny, and in the high 60's. I know my guys are all going to be sweating and miserable, so I'll probably start clipping Monday. I have a couple of blankets I can throw on if the weather changes again, but I think they'll be okay.

Mine are shedding like CRAZY and now that my new (used) Double Ks arrived today I will be clipping this weekend or next. It's rainy and sunny alternately but not very cold highs of 80s down to 50s. I'm a clipping fiend and even my two old broodmares stay clipped up and pretty all spring/summer :)

i am in rhode island but i have done heads and necks this is my boy i did his belly for pics of white for pinto

I'd really like to start - but Monday's temps were 0, Tuesday was 18, and we got up to 36 toda! WOW Felt like summer! But absolutely no clipping for another month.

I have heads clipped on the ones wearing a bridle, but too cold in Maine right now to do anymore

I cant wait to clip! I usually bodyclip about mid-April and would be happy if it would warm up enough so I can do necks! My horses are starting to shed and would appreciate the haircut, but WAY to cold up here right now to even look at the clippers. Warm weather cant get here soon enough!

Usually not until the middle of April or towards the end, then you still need to blanket in the evenings, It's defiently getting old. I hope it warms up have babies coming in less than a month!!!

One of mine has been clipped all winter. She has a thyroid problem and I had to clip her for a visit and then put her three blankets, one with a hood on for the winter, still no hair under there. My other little one that I got in December I clipped her face so I could see a horse instead of a lamb. She also has been wearing three blankets, even with all the yak hair. She was underweight when I got her and shivering, so on went the blankets, but the face has remained shaved, no ears clipped, looks a little goofy. I also just gave her pantaloon legs, needed to see her lower front legs, they looked a little "off" to me. So funny seeing her with her pantaloons, lol. They have done well. I take the blankets off the yak once a week and do a good brushing and to make sure there is nothing going on under there. All is well. She had the worst case of dandruff I had ever seen, it looked like the weather outdoors, flakes falling into a pile, but have that under control now. She is a sweet heart and is also going to be doing therapy work.
