I am wondering how many people ask for references when they sale a horse?

I am talking about the care of the horse, as in a vet reference, or from people who have been to this farm a number of times.

Not financial references.

This poll is only for a sale of a horse to someone you do not know.

If you respond, could you let us know from who you want the reference from? As in vet, farrier, etc.

Please answer honestly, if you select no, you don't have to respond.

With anything sold locally we ALWAYS deliver and the sale is not final untill I have checked the place out. If we are not delivering we ask for a reference from their vet. we had a horrible experience a few years ago when we first started with the minis and now are intensly careful with our little darlings. we rarly buy a horse for our herd that we dont plan on keeping forever.

As a buyer I have been asked for references and who my vet and farrier are and to prove it which is not a problem.

I have someone right now asking me for referances. I do not mind. This person is asking for Friends that know me mostly.

They want to make sure I take good care of my horses. Which is not a problem because I do and my friends know it.

I recently had inquiries on one of my mares. Correspondences were going wonderful, they asked many questions about her, and that made me feel good that they were truly interested in "her".

Then as we progressed and nearing a "point of sale", I asked if they could provide a reference from vet and ferrier. It was basically for my own peace of mind, and only hoped to better feel she would be well attended to for needs in general horse care.

This poll is only for a sale of a horse to someone you do not know.
I did not know this person personally, and only hoped to feel better confident where I could have potentially been sending my baby girl off to.

Oh please check me out. Anyone can come here anytime unannounced and catch me with my pants down, I don't care. I have nothing to hide and I think my horses' condition speaks for themselves. There are no bite marks, no scars, no sickness (knock on wood) and everyone is fat and sassy and nobody has mental hangups. My stalls are cleaned daily and my horses are groomed almost daily but may be sporting some mud from time to time.

I too have asked for references from a number of people that were interested in buying a horse from me. The minute I asked for a referral, suddenly there was a dead silence and well, I still have the horse. I would like to sell her, so if anyone is interested and will provide a reference, please let me know. You will get a good deal. My biggest hangup is that I don't want her to change hands a million times in her life and then end up at an auction in her old age. Geesh, is that too much to ask?

I don't normally ask as just talking to the people and listening to them I can pretty well tell where they are coming from and how horse savvy they are and what my heart tells me.

All my horses have gone to good homes so far and I have made great friends along the way.

But I have had times when my heart said no way and the horse was not sold to them. These minis are like my kids!!!

From another point of view, when we were given Big Man, the couple asked us for several references. We were stumped at first...simply because we have no friends! LOL! We're hermits.

But we figured out that they were asking for people who my husband has shod/trimmed for, done teeth for, transported for, etc... we did not mind at all.

*They did get a little too nosy, I thought (which I shouldn't say that, it sounds tacky, they were giving us their horse).

They asked for phone numbers & e-mail addresses, which is great. But then they wanted to know about our REFERENCES horses, their experience, their knowledge, etc...a couple of people got really annoyed with them, they asked some slightly personal questions, but it thankfully all worked out.

It just seemed that they wanted to know more about our references, than they wanted to know what our references thought about us, if that makes any sense.
