We have two huge girls and one runty boy-

He's not doing very well, so he's been pulled from momma and is hanging out with me and the dog at the house. (The cats are peeved!) And we're getting no sleep, but it's worth it!

Anyways,

The wild spotted black and white girl next to my shoe is my keeper, the brown and white girl is who we are going to sell, and the little boy, as long as he pulls though, is going to be bought and kept by one of my girls!

I'm so hooked. This is Fun! I told mom to get ready, I'm going to buy a few more does.

My little runt has me worried though, he got coloustrum and such, but he's just not vital, and his little floppy ears scare me. I'm having to almost force feed him, which is upsetting to both of us, but we're making progress! (He wanted the milk a little warmer then I would think is comfy, and I have to make sure the nipple has some karyo syrup on it) Any other tips/thoughts/experiences?

Anyways, here's first night pic's, and I'll be taking more today!

wimpy kid

this a good site I found when we got our bottle baby goat. Her mama had died when she was 4 days old. Good luck with your babies they are super cute!!!!

They are adorable! I can see why you're keeping the one you are...she is colored beautifully. Good luck with the little one...goats are so much fun...I miss mine sometimes.

I guessed right I said 3 !

I used to raise Pygoras and would always take them off their mom after a few days as we wanted the babies gentle and very used to people.

There is powdered goat milk that you can buy. You can mis up just what you need with warm water. The first couple of days they will give you a hard time about nursing from the bottle, then they will catch on and go crazy while they nurse. I would band the boys testicles right away, should have been done the first day, and I would have his horns burned so that they will not grow.

If you do not know how to do that, I would have the vet do it, so that you do not fry the brains.

Good luck, they are very cute!! The boy should do well enough once he gets the idea of bottle feeding. Make sure you do it evey couple of hours.

aww so cute! I love babies. I would get some milk replacement powder from the feed store. We always poked a hole in the nipple to make it a tad bigger until they started to nurse on there own. As well we would move the nipple back and forth a little to create a sucking motion.

I wouldn't castrate the boy until he's older about 8 weeks, and as for burning the horns, its usually done 1-2 weeks of age. Right when you can feel the buds is when you can burn them.

Your going to be hooked when they start getting their legs and personalities. Jumping on mama and jumping around and twisting their bodies.

Good luck, Congrats and keep us updated

We use to raise goats, they are so much fun, some of are adults thought they were lap goats and they stood about 3 feet tall. Hubby built a playground for them in the pasture and we would go out there and play with them.

Hey all

Yup we have the powered milk replacement for the little boy (had that a good month before she went

) and he's just a not strong or bouncy. We've also been milking his protesting mother for a little fresh stuff.

His sisters are all over the place already, and he's just still kinda quiet, which just has me freaked out!

I am going to band him, but wanted to wait until he's a Little more vital before I go stressing him out more.

My vet took a peek at him today, decided he may have aspirated a little and gave him a shot of antibiotics.

As these are reg dairy goats, they will all be de-budded at the correct time per my vet.

( And the vets down here are too fancy to do it, I found an old timey farmer who breeds goats that will do it for me for free, bless him, though I'm going to pay him anyways.)

Can someone explain the banding thing to me in more detail. I've been reading on it, but it sounds dreadful for them. Can I just take any old rubber band? Is there a special kind to use? That doesn't seem to be explained anywhere, it just says "the Band" sigh.

More pic's as soon as photo buckets picks them up! ;)

Very Cute ..we will be having "kids" anyday now ..dads nanny is HUGE.

For your keeper ..what about "spades" ..as in Ace of Spades ..he looks to have one on his/her back

They are "special" bands. Thicker and smaller and use a special plier to put them over the testes. I found it easier on them to just cut. They are up and running in minutes. On one of my first boys the vet used a burdizzo, which crushes the cords. He swelled up something huge and couldn't walk very well for a few days. Again, I would go with cutting. Quick and easy and over with in less than a minute.

Oh my gosh, they are SOOOO cute!!! I hope the little boy survives too. I'm sure you'll pull him through!

I just banded my 2 little fainting goats. They were playing and jumping around right after the procedure. No blood and no fuss. The tesiticles stop getting blood, dry up and fall off.

The banding is done with a tool called an elastrator and it comes with small bands that are think elastics but small. The tool is used to stretch the band big enough to fit over the testes. Then you close the elastrator and the band stays there. There is little trama from it and within a few minutes the area becomes numb as the blood supply is cut off. You just need to be sure the berries are below the elastic before closing the elastrator. They do walk a bit funny for a short time and may lay down for periods of time until the area numbs. By the next day if it is put on right your boy wont even know anything is going on back there. We have done lambs this way and also do their tails the same way. When it falls off which it does in two weeks to a month it may leave a small area that should be bluecoated or may need no further intervention at all. None of mine have needed anything more done. Very easy to learn how to do and does not hurt them for more than an hour if that.

Banding them is not very traumatic, they will yell for a little bit but then after that go bouncing off happy as a clam with their playmates.

I am surprised there were only THREE babies in that doe! She was HUGE!

Also, the burning of the horns is what I don't have the stomach for... I'm not a "livestock person" though...

They are ADORABLE!!!!!!

Congrats,

andrea

I just had to pop back in here to see if your doe had her babies yet, they are so cute, Congratulations!
