I have had lower back issues for several years and have been diagnosed with severe degenerative disc disease (fancy word for arthritis) but now my upper back has this "BURNING" sensation. It is the worst. Gosh the pain is unreal. Does anyone else suffer with this and can you tell me what it is.

The pain in my lower back is like a throbbing almost like stabbing pain, but this upper back thing burns so bad.

I've had back problems for a while now (a horse accident about 2-3 years ago) And only once did I ever have a burning sensation in my upper back, it felt like I had third degree burns. I never found out what it was though.

I type for an orthopedic group and that sounds like the nerves are being bothered probably from your lower back injury. There is a TENS unit that you can buy for about $40 that chiropractors use that really helps the lower back pain. We have one and what a difference it makes. Let me know if you want more info and I will see if I can find the catalog the chiropractor gave us for the web address.

nbark - - thank you I would love that! I had a tens unit used when my lower back went out completely two years ago and I had to go to physical therapy for awhile- would be willing to use one again for the upper back burning.

Here you go: K-med services 1-800-243-2603, just ask them to send you a catalog. They have two units, one is $35 and the other is a little more.

Love the Tens Unit

Thanks Janice - it is something I live with daily - some days are just worse than others. I'm sure you can relate if you have back trouble too.

We got a sleep number bed, which has gotten rid of my hubbys backpain and my arm would go numb in the night and now it doesnt. We are hooked!!

Hope your back feels better soon Connie...

I am going through back problems now. I herniated 2 disc about 4 weeks or so ago. They wanted to do surgery, and I met with a surgeon , who I hated, and I refused any surgery. I didnt want that man to touch me. I did go to a physical therapist, which was good . I did buy a Tens Unit off the internet. Just type in the google bar,- Tens Unit, and there will be a bunch of places you can get them. Mine was reg. 499.00 and I got it for 98.00. Now I am going to the Spinal Institute in Conway Ar. for Decompression Therepy. It is working great. I have had about 10 of 20 treatments. The mechine is a DRX9000. You should check it out and see if there is one close to where you live. Good Luck, there is nothing like back pain !

I have arthritis in my back and can share the burning pain. It is mostly when I have "overdone" it. I had physical therapy and was on about 3 anti-inflam. and a series of ESI. They helped but nothing that was permanent. Just something I have learned to live with.

I have one of those big balls that you do stretches on and it helps. I also found that moist heat works well. I have a heating pad that I microwave and put it on for twenty minutes a couple times a day as needed. I purchased it at CVS.

Good luck, it is not fun but give it time, it will heal, you will just know your limits.

Hubby herniated discs in his lower back about 8 years ago. He didn't do surgery, but did physical therapy and the shock treatment thing. It helps. But since then, he has been careful using his lower back. Which has then resulted in him using his upper back more. He gets burning sensations now and then when he's over done it. If he's not careful and takes a break (and Ibprophen) then his back will pop. Then he's out for about a week until it heals. He's stubborn and won't go to the doctor. But there isn't a whole lot they can do unless he opts for surgery (which he doesn't want to do at 29 years old).

Add me to the bad back club... I have to bodyshave ALOT and on some days I can hardly stand upright and make it to the house. I also had a lung removed several years ago and I get that burning sensation in my upper back as well really irritating pain around my scar tissue. Tens units are a good suggestion but I have found that massage therapy is the way to go for me. It might take you a few trips to find the right person, not all therapists are equal. I get more relief and feel better overall after a visit and worth every dollar.

Connie My husband has severe DDD and has had several cervical fusions, as well as lower back problems that cannot be fixed. He has suffered for Years with the burning, it is nerve pain.

Recently (about 6 months ago) he was put on Lyrica for something else..don't remember what... But within a week No more burning pain! He recently started to wean himself off it due to the fact that it makes you gain weight and within a few days of being off it he started burning again so we know this is what has helped him. Maybe you could try it?

For pain, inflammation and stiffness of my arthritis I use Tumeric capsules, it is WONDERFUL. Debby

I was on Lyrica at one point in time - I think it made me nauseous. Of course any medications that will help certain issues have to make you gain weight.

:No-Sad

It just seems like it is getting worse. I guess I will have to go back in - I know they will want to send me to the pain clinic again to have the lower lumbar injections (which hurt like h - - - ) and maybe they will do some in the upper back also. I really HATE going to the doctor for any reason and usually put it off until I have to be taken out of my house via ambulance. Stubborn I am.

Thanks for the help everyone. Yes, back pain is the WORST.

Connie, you might try putting heat on your back for 20 minutes and then if that doesn't help try ice. The thing is 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Heat works for somethings and cool works for somethings. I have great packs that I can freeze or put in the microwave. They are gel filled and when you lay on them they are smooth and not lumpy like some ice packs can be. Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks Teresa - I have been doing that the past several days and it is helping some. I need this back to get into shape before I have to bathe and clip 16 horses!
